Chanticleers Pick Up Road Win at SC State

ORANGEBURG - Fueled by double-figure scoring efforts by Warren Gillis, Elijah Wilson and Tristian Curtis along with a dominate effort on the glass, Coastal Carolina rolled to a 57-43 victory against South Carolina State Sunday at the Bulldogs' Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Gillis paced Coastal, which improved to 8-2 with its third straight victory, with a game-high 13 points. Wilson scored 12, while Curtis chipped in a season-high 10. Badou Diagne led the Chants rebounding efforts with eight and Colton Ray-St Cyr equaled his career-high with seven rebounds.

Coastal finished the contest with a 43-32 rebounding advantage, including 33 on the defensive end. Coastal also used its stellar defensive pressure to hold the Bulldogs to 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the floor.

SC State (3-7) was led by Greg Mortimer's 10 points and Darryl Palmer's five rebounds.

With Coastal leading the Bulldogs 15-12, Josh Cameron knocked down his lone 3-pointer of the game, following a stop on the defensive end Diagne matched Cameron with a three of his own to give the Chants a 21-12 lead with 8:12 to play bore the half. SC State responded with a 6-0 run capped by a Palmer jumper, cutting the Chants' lead to a single possession at 21-18. However, the Coastal would regain its composure and put together a 7-0 run of its own by way of jumpers by Diagne and Gillis along with a triple by Wilson, extending the Chants' lead to 28-18.

Wilson made his fourth basket of the game 4:12 to play in the first half and Enanga, Gillis and Cameron combined for five free throws as the Chants outscored the Bulldogs 7-0 throughout the remainder of the opening stanza, securing a 35-22 halftime lead.

Coastal used its strong defensive presence and rebounding edge to hold the Bulldogs without a point for nearly a seven minute stretch during the middle stages of the second half. While the Bulldogs struggled to find the bottom of the basket, Coastal extended its 13-point halftime lead to 21 points at 48-29 with 13 minutes to play.

SC State chipped away at the Chants lead over the ensuing seven minutes, but each time the Bulldogs' appeared poised to make a run a Chanticleer knocked down a shot. The Bulldogs would get no closer than 14 points through the remainder of the game.

Coastal Carolina continues its calendar-year ending four-game road swing at Ole Miss on Thursday, Dec. 18. Tipoff at the Rebels' C.M. Tad Smith Coliseum is set for 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be carried live on the SEC Network.
