Chants Down NC Central for Third Straight Win

Box Score Dec. 17, 2014

Final Stats

CONWAY - Anna Vogt's fourth double-double of the season paced the Chanticleers (7-2, 1-0) as the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team defeated the visiting North Carolina Central Eagles (2-9, 0-2) 67-52 Wednesday night at The HTC Center.

The junior forward's game-leading 19 points and team-leading 11 rebounds buoyed the Chants to their sixth win of the season against a non-Big South opponent as Coastal nears the end of its non-conference schedule. The Chants also moved to 3-0 all-time against the Eagles.

Ced Gibson checked in as Coastal's second-leading scorer with 15 points, and her nine assists were both a career-high and a season-high for the Chants. Stephanie Isaacs' 10 points matched the scoring total of AJ Jordan, and extended the redshirt junior's streak of double-digit scoring efforts to five games, the longest for a Chanticleer this season.

The Chants also saw their streak of outrebounding every opponent this season continue as Coastal grabbed 45 boards to NC Central's 39 .

As a team Coastal produced its second-highest field goal shooting effort of the season as the Chants finished 25-49, or 51.0 percent from the floor. At the opposite end, the Coastal defense held the Eagles to a mere 27.0 field goal shooting percentage, and an 18.2 percentage from 3-point range.

Racquel Davis was NC Central's most consistent player, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals despite playing just 29 minutes.

Vogt dominated in the first half, finishing with 16 of Coastal's 34 points while shooting 6-9 from the field and 4-5 from the line. As a team the Chants shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening frame, while holding the Eagles to just 23.3 percent. NC Central led for the first six minutes of the contest, but two free throws from Alexis Robinson tied the game at 8-8 at the 14:03 mark. Robinson's layup on Coastal's following possession then gave the Chants the lead for good.

Leading 20-14 with 8:26 left in the first, the Chants used an 8-1 run over the next three minutes to build a sizeable lead. All eight of Coastal's points during that stretch came from Vogt. On the other side of the ball, NC Central's offense centered around Davis, who was responsible for all 10 of the Eagles' points in the final 5:43 of the half.

Coming out of the break leading 34-24, the Chants' field goal shooting dropped slightly to 50.0 percent, while their 3-point shooting rose to a 57.1 percent rate. Gibson led the Chants in the final frame with 11 points, followed by the 10 points of Isaacs. Coastal's offense continued to build the lead throughout the half, resulting in a 20-point margin in Coastal's favor with just 6:37 remaining. Once again it was Davis who made the surge for NC Central, scoring six of the Eagles' final 12 points in the closing minutes and helping to cut into Coastal's lead. Davis' efforts would fall short, however, as clutch free throw shooting from Gibson and Isaacs helped seal the win for Coastal.

The Chanticleers wrap up their non-conference schedule this Sunday when they face Saint Francis (Pa.) at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center as part of the CresCom Bank Carolinas Challenge. Opening tip between the Chants and Red Flash is set for 5 pm. Coastal makes its next appearance in The HTC Center on Dec. 30 to host the visiting High Point Panthers at 7 pm.
