Field Events Dominate Opening Day of CCU Invitational

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams competed in just one track event during the opening day of the CCU Invitational while picking up a pair of wins in the field events. Junior Reggie Nelson and freshman Mark Stembridge swept the long jump events. Nelson won the "A" flight with a leap of 7.13m (23-4.75) while Stembridge won the "B" flight with a jump of 6.80m (22-3.75).

Junior Joseph Keitt made the most of CCU's lone track event as he finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:55.16.

Senior Naomi Atkins highlighted the women's performances with a third place finish in the hammer throw. Her toss of 49.06 meters (160-11) bested the fourth place finisher by over a meter. Freshman Krissy Sansbury came in seventh in the event with a toss of 46.45 meters (152-05).

Sophomore Amirah Al-Bayyinah, senior Keegan Woodson and sophomore Teka Simpson finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women's long jump "A" flight. Al-Bayyinah's jump of 5.48m (17-11.75) was less than a meter behind the leader from Long Island University. Woodson finished with a distance of 5.35m (17-6.75) while Simpson came in sixth with the same distance of 5.35m.

Sophomore Ryan Minor and senior Cameron Griggs came in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's hammer throw. Minor's throw of 56.53m (185-05) finished just ahead of Griggs' toss of 55.58m (182-04).

Jamayel Hugee placed fifth in the men's long jump "B" flight behind Stembridge with a distance of 6.45m (21-2.0).

Sophomore Brianna Cristiano placed fifth in the women's pole vault "B" flight with a height of 3.20m (10-6.0). The final women's top ten finisher was junior Otessa Velasquez. Velasquez placed ninth in the women's javelin with a throw of 36.88m (121-00).

The final men's top ten finisher was freshman Ishmael Kamara who placed ninth in the men's long jump "A" flight. Kamara's leap of 6.64m (21-9.50) was 3.25 inches ahead of the tenth place finisher from Radford University.

The Chants will return to action tomorrow as they continue to compete in the CCU Invitational.
