CLEMSON - Coastal Carolina overcame an early four-run deficit, tying the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning, but Clemson rallied back with three runs in the late innings to secure a 9-6 win in front of 3,806 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Chanticleers fall to 17-21 and the Tigers improve to 22-14. Coastal will return home Thursday when head coach Gary Gilmore tries again for career win 1,000, hosting Presbyterian at Noon at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Coastal left 13 runners on base and only had seven hits, but drew nine walks to stay within striking distance.

Clemson struck first when Garrett Boulware hit a solo home run to left field. The deficit could have been worse, but Tyler Chadwick threw out Tyler Slaton trying to take second on a pitch in the dirt and Dalton Moats picked off Tyler Krieger at first base.

Coastal answered in the top of the second. With one out, Kyle Jackson, Colin Hering and Richard Carter had consecutive singles, the last being and RBI scoring Jackson.

The Tigers regained the advantage with four runs in the third to lead 5-1. Slaton drew a leadoff walk before Krieger and Boulware had back-to-back singles to load the bases. Steven Dugger's bloop single to center plated Slaton. Chris Okey followed with a two-run double. Steve Wilkerson brought home Duggar with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Chanticleers trimmed their deficit to 5-2 in the fifth thanks to a solo home run from Zach Remillard, his second blast of the season.

In the sixth, Coastal loaded the bases as Hering struck out, but reached base on a passed ball before Carter and Steven Whitaker walked. Connor Owings reached on a fielder's choice, but Hering was retired at home. Michael Paez walked to force home Carter and Chadwick followed with a bloop single to left, scoring Whitaker and Owings to tie the game at 5-5.

Clemson answered in the home half of the sixth. Boulware hit a two-out double and Dugger followed with a soft line drive RBI single to right field, putting the Tigers up 6-5. In the seventh, Clemson pushed its advantage to 7-5. With runners on first and third, pinch hitter Joe Costigan drove in Shane Kennedy with an RBI ground out.

Whitaker started the eighth inning by reaching on an error. With two outs, Chadwick walked and Remillard delivered an RBI single to center to make it a one-run game, 7-6.

The Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the eighth. Kreiger had a leadoff single. Then, with two outs, Okey walked and Wilkerson followed with an RBI single. Jon McGibbon walked to load the bases and Baum forced home Okey with a free pass.

Jackson drew a leadoff walk in the Chants' ninth frame and advanced to third two batters later as Whitaker doubled down the left field line. Both Jackson and Whitaker would be left stranded as Clemson's Clay Bates notched his fourth strikeout to end the game.

Brock Hunter (0-1) pitched well in relief, but suffered the loss. The sophomore pitched a career-high 3.1 innings and struck out a career-high five, but allowed five hits, one run and one walk. Drew Moyer (2-0) was credited with the win, allowing no hits or walks in 1.1 innings.
