Rock Hill, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team lost Tuesday afternoon's match 5-2 at Winthrop, which sits at third place in the Big South Conference with a 12-8, 5-1 record. With the loss the Chanticleers drop to 10-8 overall, and their 2-3 conference record places them in sixth.
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead early after winning the doubles point on the first and third courts.
Winthrop's Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak won at No. 1, downing Philippe Tsangaridis and Leo Christofides 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, Ted Nilsson and Hunter could not hold off Juan Boada and Corey Decandia as the Winthrop pair won the match 8-3.
Renan Samed and Garik Yedigarian won the No. 2 doubles match for Coastal, taking an 8-6 decision over Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell.
In singles, Tsangaridis and Nilsson were the only Chants to win points for Coastal.
#101 Tsangaridis defeated Yuta Hirokawa at No. 1 in straight sets 6-0, 7-6, while Nilsson took a 6-2, 6-0 match at No. 2 against Patrick.
At No. 4, Mitchell prevailed over Christofides and Boada won in straights against Whalen at No. 5. Michael Chen defeated Samed in straight sets on the sixth singles court, and Comerford was awarded the point for Winthrop at No. 4 after Yedigarian retired in the third set.
The Chants return to the courts on Wednesday when they host Big South rival Liberty for a 2 p.m. match at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. Liberty enters Wednesday's match as the third-place team in the Big South with a 10-9, 3-3 record.
