CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team opened its 2014-15 season Friday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, played at the par 72, 2,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
Host North Carolina raced to a 15-under par 273 in the opening round and own a nine-shot lead over second place Charlotte. Coastal Carolina opened with a 14-over par 302 and stand in 17th place in the 18-team field. The tournament will continue with 18 holes Saturday and a final 18 holes on Sunday.
Sophomore Chris Williams, who is tied for 43rd, led the Chanticleers in round one, carding a one-over par 73. The 73 is his third-best career round, starting his collegiate career with rounds of 70-72 last season. Williams opened his round with a bogey, birdie and bogey before reeling off four pars to stand at one-over through his first seven holes. He closed his opening nine with birdies on holes 17 and 18 to make the turn at one-under. He then had three bogeys and three birdies on the first six holes on his final nine. However a double bogey on the par four seventh hole with a pair of pars to close out his round led to the 73.
Fellow sophomore Olle Widegren was one off Williams' pace, shooting a 74 to stand in a tie for 56th.
Three newcomers round out the Chanticleer contingent, including transfer Ryan Carpenter (77), freshman Harrison Frye (78) and junior college transfer Vinnie Murphy (82).
