Sept. 15, 2014 Final Stats
WILMINGTON, N.C. - A rough start doomed the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team in a 7-0 loss to host UNC Wilmington Monday night in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational.
The Chanticleers (3-5-0) fell behind by three goals in the first 15 minutes, were forced to play down a man for 65 minutes and two down for the final 10. UNC Wilmington, meanwhile, notched its fifth win in six games to improve to 5-3-0.
The last six matchups between the teams had each been decided by just one goal, but the Seahawks, who were coming off an eight-goal performance against Francis Marion, remained hot offensively. They got on the board on a broken play off of a UNCW goal kick that deflected into the CCU defensive third. Forward Katrina Guillou won a race with goalkeeper Faith Farley to the loose ball and chipped it in for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Less than three minutes later, Maddie McCormick took a throw-in near the endline to the right of the Coastal goal and fed a pass in front to Lindsey Byrne, who one-touched into the left corner.
UNCW then made it 3-0 in the 15th minute on a penalty kick by Guillou. She again used her speed to get behind the Coastal backline on a run that resulted in a breakaway and Farley was forced to take her down just inside the box. In addition to the PK, Farley was issued a red card on the play.
Freshman Autumn Jaworski made her collegiate debut in place of Farley and made a nice save on the first shot on goal she faced after the penalty kick, a hard shot by McCormick from the middle of the box that was headed toward the left side of the net.
The Chants were able to gain more possession time in the Seahawks' defensive half late in the opening period, but were held without a good scoring opportunity.
UNCW then made it 5-0 on goals by Kennedy Ulrich in the 58th and 59th minutes, converted another penalty kick when Maddie Phillips was given a red card in the 80th minute, and capped the scoring in the 83rd with a two-man advantage. CCU was issued four cards in the match.
Kacey Kelley and Rylie Johnson represented the Chants on the All-Tournament Team.
The Chanticleers head back on the road to wrap up their non-conference schedule when they travel to Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 19 for a 7 p.m. game.
