Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Presbyterian Saturday afternoon, falling 84-78 to the Blue Hose at The HTC Center. The loss marred a career performance by AJ Jordan, who scored 36 points through the second half and extra periods after being held scoreless in the first.

Coastal now falls below .500 for the first time this season with a 7-8 overall record, and a 1-5 mark against Big South opponents. Presbyterian picked up its first win in three games, and improves to 8-8, 3-4 on the season.

Jordan shot 54.5 percent from the field, knocking down 12 of her 22 attempts, and was a perfect 2-2 from beyond the arc. The senior guard was also lights out from the free throw line, making all but one of her 11 shots. She was Coastal's second-leading rebounder with seven, led the team with four assists and had a game-high five steals. Jordan's previous single-game point record was 27, which she accomplished on two separate occasions.

Jordan entered the second half with no points, but orchestrated a 17-8 Coastal run during the opening 10 minutes, accounting for 10 points herself and assisting on the remaining seven. Anna Vogt capped the run with a layup to give the Chants a 43-40 lead.

PC responded with a flurry of points, outscoring Coastal 7-0 in just one minute and 17 seconds to jump back in front 47-43. Then, just a few possessions later, Jordan began a three-minute stretch where she alone outscored Presbyterian 11-4, giving a three point lead back to Coastal with under five minutes remaining in regulation.

The Chants managed to retain that lead until, with just 11 seconds remaining before the buzzer, Rebecca Walker drained a jumper to even the score at 65 apiece. The Chants quickly moved the ball into the offensive zone, and called a timeout with six seconds remaining to set up a final play. The initial jumper by Ced Gibson caromed off the rim, but Vogt grabbed the rebound and appeared to lay the ball in just before the red light flashed. The initial call on the floor was a good basket, but after a review it was determined the shot came late, and the game was sent to overtime.

The first overtime period saw each team score eight points in the first four minutes of play. Jordan had six of Coastal's eight, and Gibson provided the Chants' final basket. The score was knotted at 73 apiece with a minute to go, but each team missed its final shots of the period.

Presbyterian had six different players record points in the second overtime period as the Blue Hose outscored the Chants 11-5 to claim the victory. Jordan had all five of Coastal's points, hitting two free throws midway through before capping the Chants' scoring with a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining.

Coastal's 78 points came against a PC defense that entered the game ranked third in the nation in points allowed. Vogt and Gibson each chipped in 16 points, and Vogt added eight rebounds to co-lead the Chants on the boards alongside Alexis Robinson. Gibson matched Jordan's rebound total with seven.

Presbyterian finished with an impressive 53.3 shooting percentage for the game, and was led in scoring by Keyonna Allen's 21 points. Janie Miles provided 17 points for the Blue Hose, while Walker and Cortney Storey each had 10.

Jordan's 36 points are a single-game high for Coastal this season, and she is currently two points away from passing former Chant Janice Dewitt for 10th place among Coastal's all-time career points leaders.

The Chants return to the hardwood on Tuesday, making a brief stop at Charleston Southern for a 7 p.m. game against the Bucs. Coastal is then back at The HTC Center for the next two, hosting Winthrop on Jan. 17 and Campbell on Jan. 20.
