CONWAY - Led by 20-plus point scoring efforts by AJ Jordan and Jas Adams, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team rolled to an 81-62 victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon inside The HTC Center.
The win, which snapped a five-game losing streak to the Eagles, moves the Chants back above .500 on the season with a 9-8 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in conference play. Winthrop, the defending Big South Tournament champion, moved to 8-9 with the defeat and 4-4 against league opponents.
Jordan led all scorers with her 25 points on 10 made shots and three free throws. Adams finished with a career-high 23 points on seven baskets, including a 4-of-6 performance from 3-point range. Joining Jordan and Adams in double-figures were Ced Gibson and Anna Vogt with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Winthrop was paced by Erica William' 16-point, 11-rebound double-double. Shaquilla Nunn and Samiya Wright each reached double-figures with 10 points each.
Coastal closed the game shooting 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the floor, including a season-high 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from deep. Winthrop shot 38.0 percent for the contest, including a dismal 15.0 percent (3-of-20) from beyond the arc.
The Chants and Eagles exchanged baskets in opening 12 minutes of the game before Gibson took over and outscored the visitors 7-2, giving CCU a 27-22 lead. A Wright three and Williams bucket inside cut Coastal's lead to 29-27 with 3:44 to play before the half. However, Coastal responded with 9-3 run to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room. Coastal's half-ending scoring streak featured 3-pointers by Jordan and Gibson along with three points by Adams.
The Chants shot 53 percent in the first half and outrebounded the Eagles 23-15 in the opening 20 minutes. Furthermore, Coastal's defense forced seven Winthrop turnovers and held the Eagles to 2-of-11 shooting through the latter stages of the period.
Coastal extended its nine-point halftime lead out to 13 point with Jordan's second three of the game with just under 16 minutes to play. Winthrop then scored the game's next six points, cutting CCU's lead to 47-40. Coastal immediately responded with a 10-2 run, taking a then game-high 15-point lead at 57-42 with 11:29 showing on the game clock. Jordan scored on a pair of jumpers from the elbow, while Gibson and Adams each counted shots from deep during the run.
Winthrop would get no closer than 12 throughout the remainder of the game as the Chants outscored the Eagles 24-20 over the final 11 minutes of play.
The Chanticleers remain at home to host Campbell at 7 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 20.
