CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fell 71-65 to the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in Saturday's Big South action at The HTC Center.

The Chanticleers' third straight loss moves the team to 10-11 on the season, while the win bumps Gardner-Webb's overall record to 8-13. Each team is now 4-8 this season against conference opponents.

Coastal's Jas Adams and Gardner-Webb's Jessica Heilig shared the game's lead in scoring as each student-athlete finished with 17 points. For Adams, it was the third straight game that the freshman guard has led the Chants in scoring. She also had seven rebounds, two steals and led the team with four assists.

Besides Adams, the Chants had three other starters score in double figures. Alexis Robinson closed the game with 14 points, while AJ Jordan and Anna Vogt each tallied 10. Robinson was also the game's leading rebounder, pulling in 16 boards for her fourth double-double this season.

Candace Brown followed Heilig in scoring for Gardner-Webb with 16 points, and grabbed six boards to share the team's rebounding lead alongside Alicia Quinn. Alexus Hill was the third Bulldog to score in double figures with 11 points.

The Chants dominated the pace of play in the opening 12 minutes, jumping out to a 26-16 lead while shooting over 40.0 percent from the field and out-rebounding GWU 18-6. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a Mayhana Dunovant 3-pointer, to even the score. Adams, Gibson and Robinson combined to give Coastal five quick points to retake the lead, but a three from Hill and a jumper on the fast break by Heilig evened the score at 31-31 with 2:38 left in the first. After the sides traded baskets, Heilig scored from the paint with 12 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead at the half.

Gardner-Webb began the second half by outscoring Coastal 15-5 in the first five minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 12 points. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 46.4 percent from the field in the second half, and were led by the 12 points of Brown. Coastal shot just 35.5 percent from the field in the second half, and finished 0-7 on 3-point attempts.

GWU led by six points or more for the majority of the second, though the Chants were able to cut the lead to five in the final 30 seconds after getting back-to-back baskets just three seconds apart.

The Chants out-rebounded Gardner-Webb 47-34. It was the first time Coastal recorded over 45 rebounds in a game since pulling in 63 against Johnson & Wales on Dec. 4.

Coastal's 22 turnovers on the night marked the first time since playing at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 3 that the Chants have turned the ball over more than 20 times. GWU finished with 22 points off of Chanticleer turnovers.

The Chants remain at home to begin the final month of the regular season, hosting third-place Radford on Thursday, Jan. 5, for a 7 p.m. tip. General admission is free for all fans as part of Coastal's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
