Final Stats

CONWAY - The Chanticleer men's tennis team won its third straight match with a 6-1 victory over visiting USC Upstate on the first day of competition at the brand new Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.

With the win the Chants improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Spartans remain winless at 0-2.

Coastal started the day with a sweep of doubles to take the match's opening point.

Vuk Velickovic and Rick Timmerman paired at No. 3 to blank Upstate's Viktor Selander and Ignacio Garrido 6-0. The point was then sealed for the Chants on the first court, where Philippe Tsangarides and Kaue Pereira downed Jamie Yates and Ramon Simonetti 6-2.

The No. 2 doubles match featuring Coastal's Renan Samed and Garik Yedigarian versus Upstate's John Giakoumakis and Matt Bennion went unfinished with the Chanticleer duo leading 5-4.

Coastal closed the match taking all but one of the remaining points on the singles courts.

Pereira bested Simonetti in straight sets on the first court, as did Velickovic with Yates on No. 3.

Jabor Al-Mutawa defeated Dharni 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, while Pedro Leme handed a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Giakoumakis at No. 5. Timmerman rounded out Coastal's singles winners with two-set defeat of Garrido on the sixth court.

Selander recorded Upstate's lone point of the match, upending Yedigarian at No. 2, 7-6, 7-6.

"I really appreciate the support we had today at the first match of our new facility," said head coach Chris Powers. "Great support, and great effort as a team today. It was certainly a special day in the history of our program."

The Chants hit the road this week for a challenging match at #54 UNC Wilmington on Tuesday at 1 p.m. It will be the Chants' third match this season against a ranked opponent.
