CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina's Tar Heel Intercollegiate men's golf tournament that was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (October 3-4) has been cancelled due to Hurricane Joaquin, which is scheduled to move up the Atlantic Ocean coastline this weekend.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rains and possible hurricane-like conditions to the Triangle through the weekend.
"Certainly it is disappointing to cancel the Tar Heel Intercollegiate," says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. "Playing in our tournament at our home course is always a highlight of the schedule. But the forecasts call for torrential rain and high winds, the course is already saturated with rain, and there is a possibility teams could have their flights home cancelled on Sunday. Regrettably, cancelling the event is the most prudent and safest decision for all involved. We wanted to make this decision now so the teams who were flying here could change their plans."
The tournament will not be made up.
