CAMDEN - Coastal Carolina junior Alfredo Ruiz shot a career-low 69 on Sunday to tie for fourth at the Camden Collegiate Invitational. The Chanticleers finished ninth with a 54-hole total of 883 (293-297-293) at the par 70 Camden Country Club.
Host South Carolina won the 11-team event with a three-round score of 2-under par 838. Charleston Southern posted the low round on Sunday (279) and finished second with a 54-hole total of 863, two strokes better than third-place Furman.
Ruiz posted a 54-hole total of 211 (70-72-69) to tie Wofford's Jeremy Grab for fourth. South Carolina's Keenan Huskey was individual medalist, shooting a 5-under par 205 (69-68-68), with his teammate Will Miles was runner-up with a three-round score of 208 (70-67-71). Wofford's Andrew Novak was third (67-67-75=209).
Ruiz, who started the final round on hole 10 and began his final round in ninth place, reeled off eight straight pars until suffering a bogey on the par 4, 18th hole. He then posted pars on holes 1-6 before getting back to even par with a birdie on the par 5, seventh hole. He finished his career-low round with a par and a birdie to post his 69.
Ruiz not only recorded his first career top five finish, it was his first inside the top 10 and his third inside the top 20. This is the second time in as many events Ruiz has finished 54 holes at 1-over par and the 211 is his career-best for a 54-hole event by three strokes.
Ryan Carpenter, playing as an individual, shot a career-best 67 in the second round, but shot 75 on Sunday to tie for 15th with a 54-hole total of 216 (74-67-75). The 216 was Carpenter's best 54 score as a Chanticleer and his second-best career total, shooting 214 as a freshman while at College of Charleston. In his career-best round of 67 in round two, Carpenter posted 12 pars, one bogey and four birdies, including one on his final hole. On Sunday, Carpenter had nine pars and three birdies, but had a pair of double bogeys on holes three and 13 to miss his first career top 10 as a Chanticleer.
Olle Widegren moved up eight spots to finish in a tie for 32nd after a final round 1-over par 71 and three-round total of 221 (75-75-71). The junior was 1-over par after his opening nine thanks to a birdie with two bogeys. He worked his score to 1-uver through 16 holes but finished his ro9und with bogeys on his 17th and 18th holes for his 71.
Daniel Overas tied Widegren for 32nd as he also posted a 54-hole total of 221 (72-73-76). Harrison Frye, playing as an individual, tied for 49th with a score of 226 (77-72-76=226), Luis Ruiz tied for 59th (76-77-77=230) and Josh Pisarri finished 76th (79-82-85=246).
Coastal Carolina will conclude its fall portion of the 2014-15 schedule Nov. 1-3 at the Kiawah Classic.
