Coastal Tops Charleston Southern in Dig Pink Match

Box Score Oct. 9, 2015

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won its sixth straight match -- and fifth against a Big South opponent -- Friday night as the Chanticleers downed Charleston Southern in three sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-13) at The HTC Center. The Chants also held their annual Dig Pink fundraiser, with all funds collected benefitting the Side-Out Foundation for the research and treatment of women's breast cancer.

Coastal improves to 13-4, 5-0 with the win, and is the first Chanticleer team to win its first five conference matches since the 2005 squad. CSU, meanwhile, falls to 4-15 overall and remains winless in the Big South at 0-3.

Friday's shutout was the ninth of the season for the Chants, and fourth against a Big South opponent. Coastal has surrendered just one set in five conference matches thus far.

Eszter Nagy paced the Big South's leading offense as the Chants closed the match attacking at a .314 pace. The senior middle blocker posted a .615 hitting percentage after putting down eight kills on 13 attempts with no errors. Natasa Savovic matched Nagy with eight kills, but it was junior middle blocker Annayka Legros who led the Chants with 10. Freshman setter Sara Boothe led all players with 29 assists.

Carla Cahill and Lian Bernett tallied 12 and 11 digs, respectively, while Legros led Coastal's blocking efforts with three solos. Overall, Coastal won the blocking battle 6-0.

Coastal opened the match hitting .321 and received four kills apiece from Nagy and Legros as the Chants cruised to 12-point opening-set victory. Booth, Bernett and Hardeman each had three digs as the Chants held the Bucs to hitting just .071 in the set.

Charleston Southern improved its hitting to .196 and played the Chants much closer in a second set that saw 17 ties and eight lead changes. The set was tied late at 22-22 before a CSU service error put the Chants ahead by one. Another CSU error set up set point, and Hardeman's fifth kill of the game gave Coastal a 2-0 match lead.

The final set looked much the same as the first as Coastal jumped ahead early and used a .371 hitting percentage to protect its lead. Savovic led all players with five kills in the set, followed by four from Legros.

Friday's contest marked the end of Coastal's three-match home stand, and the Chants now take to the road for a pair of conference matches in Virginia. Coastal faces Radford for a 7 p.m. match on Friday before making the trip to Liberty for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday.
