CLEMSON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team received double figure scoring from Yasmin Miller and Rachael Gregory, and forced 24 turnovers as the Chanticleers won their first-ever game against Clemson, defeating the Tigers 63-47 Sunday afternoon at Jervey Gym.
Sunday's game was just the third all-time meeting between the sides, and first since the 2003-04 season.
Coastal improves to 2-0 with its second win of the season. It is the third straight year the Chants have won their opening two games under Jaida Williams.
The Chants led by three early in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by Clemson's Danielle Edwards cut Coastal's lead to 49-46, but Coastal's defense held the Tigers to just one point for the remainder of regulation.
Miller and Gregory each finished as the game's leading scorers with 18 points. Miller added five rebounds while Gregory grabbed six and had three takeaways.
Jas Adams led the Chants with 10 rebounds and four steals while also chipping in eight points to finish behind Miller and Gregory in scoring.
Coastal closed the game shooting 35.1 percent from the field while holding Clemson to shooting 28.3 percent. The Tigers held a 48-37 rebounding advantage, but committed eight more turnovers than the Chants.
The two sides played each other close to start the game as Coastal led one, 11-10, at the end of the opening quarter. Clemson briefly regained the lead in the second before Gregory scored five straight points to put Coastal ahead for good.
The Chants outscored the Tigers 8-3 in the final three minutes of the opening half to head into the locker room with a 28-21 lead.
Coastal shot 48.0 percent from the field in second half as the Chants went on to outscore the Tigers 35-26 over the final two quarters of play.
Coastal win over Clemson marks the second all-time for the program against an ACC opponent. The first win against the conference came in the 1999-2000 season when the Chant topped Wake Forest at home, 72-60.
The Chants remain on the road for their next game, traveling to Saint Francis to take on the Red Flash in 7 p.m. contest Wednesday in Loretto, Pa.
