Sacred Heart Outlasts Coastal, 71-62

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team led Sacred Heart by four at the end of the third quarter, but the Pioneers outscored the Chants 28-15 in the final frame to claim a 71-62 win in the opening game of the San Juan Shootout Friday morning at the Mario Morales Coliseum.

With the loss Coastal falls to 3-2 on the season while Sacred Heart earned its first win and improves to 1-3.

The Chants outscored Sacred Heart 19-14 in the opening quarter, and both teams recorded 11 points in the second to give Coastal a 30-25 halftime advantage. SHU cut the lead by one during the third quarter as the Pioneers tallied 18 points to Coastal's 17.

Sacred Heart took the lead from Coastal in the opening minute of the final quarter as the Pioneers claimed the first five points on free throws from Adaysha Williams and a 3-pointer from Hannah Kimmel. Coastal went back in front on consecutive field goals from Alexis Robinson with just under seven minutes remaining, but Williams knotted the game again before Shelby Hickey rolled one in from the paint with 5:37 remaining to give SHU the lead for good.

Williams led the Pioneers with 13 points in the final quarter, and finished as the game's scoring leader with 21. Also finishing in double figures for SHU were Alissa Tarsi (16 points), Kimmel (14 points) and Hickey (12 points).

Yasmin Miller and Ced Gibson led Coastal in scoring with 13 points each, followed by the 10 points from Nicole Isaacs and Robinson. Robinson also tied for the team lead in rebounding as both she and Jas Adams came down with six boards.

Sacred Heart shot 48.0 percent from the field for the game while Coastal posted a 41.1 field goal shooting percentage.

The difference maker in the first half was 3-point shooting, as the Chants went 5 of 9 from distance compared to Sacred Heart missing all seven of its attempts. Coastal managed just two treys on eight attempts in the second half, however, while the Pioneers shot over 50.0 percent from the field and made good on 19 of 21 (90.5 percent) free throw attempts.

Coastal finished with a slim 33-32 advantage in rebounds.

Action from the San Juan Shootout continues on Saturday as the Chants face a Hofstra team that entered the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Opening tip between the Chants and Pride is set for 11 a.m. AST/ 10 p.m. EST at Mario Morales Coliseum.
