Coastal Falls to Campbell in Conference Opener

Box Score Dec. 1, 2015

Final Stats

CONWAY - Nicole Isaacs and Ced Gibson notched career highs of 32 points and 24 points, respectively, but it was not enough as Campbell (4-2, 1-0) held on to defeat the Chanticleers (3-4, 0-1) 83-70 in the teams' Big South Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at The HTC Center.

It was the first conference-opening loss for the Chants under Jaida Williams, and first since Coastal fell 52-36 to Presbyterian in 2010-11.

Isaacs' 32 points came on 10-20 from the field and 3-3 from the line. The senior guard made nine 3-pointers, one short of the school's single-game record of 10 set by Nikki Reddick in 2002-03. Isaacs also tied for the team lead with six rebounds while adding four assists and four steals.

Gibson also went 10-20 from the field, including four 3-pointers, while dishing out three assists. Gibson has now reached double figures in each of her last four games after going scoreless in the first two.

Rachael Gregory was the third Chanticleer to finish in double figures, recording 10 points on 4-15 from the field and 2-6 from the line.

Campbell closed the game shooting 51.0 percent from the field, including 62.5 percent in the second half. The Fighting Camels also made 28 of their 37 free throw attempts, nearly tripling the 13 total attempts awarded to the Chants.

The Chanticleer defense started the game strong as Isaacs recorded back-to-back steals that resulted in points from Gregory and Gibson at the opposite end of the court. Coastal's 11-3 lead that came in the opening five minutes did not last long, however, as the Chants missed five of their next six field goals attempts, allowing Campbell to tie the game with just over a minute before the buzzer. Bria Emanuel split a pair of free throw attempts before the quarter ended to give Campbell a 16-15 lead.

Coastal regained the lead once in the second quarter after Gibson hit a 3-pointer 30 seconds in, but the Camels went ahead for good just a minute later when Edwards hit a jumper to spark an 11-3 Campbell run.

The first half ended with Campbell shooting 40.7 percent from the field to Coastal's 32.4 percent. The Camels also made 10 of 16 free throws while Coastal missed its lone attempt of the opening half.

Campbell expanded its lead to 61-42 by the end of the third quarter as the Camels came out of the locker room shooting just over 60 percent from the field.

Campbell led by as many as 26 points in the final quarter before Coastal, led by a combined four 3-pointers between Isaacs and Gibson, rallied to cut the deficit to just nine with a minute left in the game. The comeback stalled there, however, as Coastal was whistled for three more fouls in the final minute, and Campbell made four of its final six free throws.

The Chants have a week off before hosting Warren Wilson next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game at The HTC Center. The Chanticleer women make up the first part of a Coastal basketball double header, as the Chanticleer men play North Carolina Wesleyan at 6:30 p.m.
