Coastal Carolina Baseball Falls,9-4, to Western Kentucky

CONWAY - Western Kentucky (1-1) hit three, two-run home runs to take an 9-4 decision versus Coastal Carolina (1-1) Saturday afternoon at the seventh annual Caravelle Resort Tournament at CCU's Springs Brooks Stadium.

Due to the forecast of inclement weather in the coming days, Coastal Carolina baseball announced a change of schedule for Sunday and Monday of the Caravelle Resort Tournament. For Sunday, only one game is scheduled to be played as Canisius and Old Dominion will square off at 2 pm at Springs Brooks Stadium. The other games, including Coastal Carolina's game with Maryland, have been cancelled.

An addition to the schedule, Coastal will play Canisius at Noon on Monday (Feb. 16). Weather permitting on Tuesday (Feb. 17), the Chanticleers will play Canisius as scheduled at 1:30 pm.

Western Kentucky took advantage of two Chanticleer errors and a home run to take a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Philip Diedrick started the frame by reaching on an error. Two pitches later, Danny Hudzina hit a two-run home run to left field. Harrison Scanlon followed with a single and moved to second when Thomas Peter delivered a sacrifice but was safe at first due to an error. After a sacrifice bunt, Trevor Lowe plated Scanlon with an RBI single and Peter moved to third. Cody Wofford capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Coastal trimmed its deficit to one with three runs in the fourth inning. Zach Remillard was hit by a pitch and advanced 90 feet on a Tyler Chadwick single. Remillard took third on a wild pitch and scored thanks to an RBI single by Dalton Ewing, who was 3-for-4 for the afternoon. An error by WKU allowed Chadwick to score and put Ewing on third. Ewing later scored on a wild pitch.

The Hilltoppers answered with two runs in the top of the fifth. Anderson Miller had a leadoff double and scored on a two-run home run by Diedrick.

Western Kentucky added another two-run shot in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. With two outs, Lowe was hit by a pitch and Wofford followed with a home run to left field.

In the ninth, Western Kentucky tacked on a final run. Church drew a leadoff walk and went from first to third on a ground out. Hudzina followed a sacrifice fly to left.

Josh Bartley (1-0) earned the win. He allowed four hits and three runs over 5.0 innings. Chad Adkins (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed five hits and four runs (one earned) in three-plus innings.
