Rock Hill, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team was unable to contain the Winthrop tandem of Erica Williams and Schaquilla Nunn, who combined for over 45 points as the Eagles (16-11, 12-6) avoided a season sweep by the Chanticleers (12-15, 6-12) with an 81-68 victory Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Williams closed the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead all players in both categories, while Nunn provided 22 points shooting 8-13 from the floor and 6-9 from the line.
Anna Vogt matched Nunn with 22 points for the Chants, setting a new career high for the junior forward. Vogt went 10-14 from the field, 2-4 from the line and co-led the team with nine rebounds. AJ Jordan also grabbed nine boards for the Chants, and finished with 17 points after scoring just two in the opening half. Jas Adams and Ced Gibson scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Gibson added a team-high three assists to her final line.
A high-scoring first half saw Winthrop go into the locker room with a 43-30 lead after shooting 48.7 percent from the field. Vogt and Williams each poured in 13 points for their respective sides, but it was the 14 points of Aliyah Kilpatrick that gave Winthrop the edge.
The Eagles grabbed the early lead until Vogt, who tallied 10 of the Chants' first 14 points, rolled in six straight to even the score at 14-14. Kilpatrick responded with five points of her own to put Winthrop back in front, and added seven more in the next eight minutes as Winthrop outscored the Chants by 15 points to take the largest lead of the half at 43-25. Vogt and Gibson managed to cut into the deficit before the half expired as the former hit a short jumper and the latter a 3-pointer 30 seconds apart.
Kilpatrick was held scoreless in the second half, but Nunn filled the void with 18 points. The final 20 minutes also featured back-and-forth scoring between the Big South's top two point getters, as Jordan countered Williams' 11 points with 15 of her own. Jordan opened the half scoring seven of the Chants' first 12 points, and worked her way to the free throw line on four separate occasions where she finished 5-8.
The Chants shot just below 50 percent from the field in the second half, and finished at 43.8 percent for the game. Winthrop, meanwhile, went 32-67 (47.8%) from the field and out-rebounded Coastal 44-36. The Chants did win the battle in the paint, however, outscoring the Eagles 28-22.
The Chants now head to Campbell to play their final road game of the season. Tuesday night's contest from Gore Arena will be televised on the American Sports Network, with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
