CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fought until the final whistle but ultimately came up short as they suffered a 10-6 loss to Virginia Tech at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 8-3 with 12:41 left to play, the Chanticleerss drew within striking distance after scoring three unanswered goals in less than a four-minute span to cut the Hokies' lead to 8-6 with 4:49 on the clock. However, Virginia Tech was able to close the game behind a pair of goals from seniors Megan Will and Meg Bartley, their fourth and third of the game, respectively, to make the final score 10-6.

The Hokies broke a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the season while the Chants fell to 1-1.

Virginia Tech was the first to get on the scoreboard after freshman Emma Harden put one in the back of the net less than five minutes into the game. However, Coastal answered with back-to-back goals from freshman Haley Kyger and senior Jen Cosgrove and took its first lead of the game. The Hokies then responded with three goals in the last 7:56 of the first half to take a 4-2 advantage into the intermission.

The two teams traded goals to start the second half, but Virginia Tech was able to extend its lead behind three consecutive goals from Will before Coastal made its late push.

For Coastal, Cosgrove continued her hot start to the season as she again led the Chants with two goals, pushing her season total to six goals through the first two games. Sophomore Alicia Geiter and Rachel Wagner also added goals for the Chants, marking Wagner's first of her career.

Similarly to Cosgrove, Will maintained her pace as she has now scored 17 goals through the Hokies' first five games.

Coastal Carolina's Jenna Stover and Virginia Tech's Meagh Graham each remained in the goal for the duration of the game. Stover recorded eight saves to go along with the 10 goals allowed and suffered the loss. Graham stopped six shots while allowing the six goals and earned the win.

With Sunday's win, Virginia Tech is now 3-0 all-time against Coastal Carolina and 2-0 in Conway.

The Chants return to action in less than a week as they host Jacksonville University on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
