CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team received 48 points from AJ Jordan and Anna Vogt, but just five points from the rest of its roster as the Chanticleers (12-17, 6-14) fell 87-53 in their final regular season game against UNC Asheville (8-21, 7-13) on Saturday at The HTC Center.
The Chants will not have to wait long to avenge their regular season sweep at the hands of the Bulldogs, as the teams will face each other in the first round of the Big South Women's Basketball Championship on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. at The HTC Center. With today's win Asheville locked up the No. 8 seed, while Coastal enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed.
Jordan was impressive in her final regular season game as a Chanticleer, leading all players with 28 points shooting 9-16 from the floor and 10-12 from the line. Her point total moved her ahead of Coastal alum Brooke Weisbrod as the program's sixth all-time leading scorer, and she tied former Chant Olivia Irick for the most games played in a Chanticleer uniform at 117.
Vogt finished with 20 points, marking the third time in the past five games that junior forward has finished with 20 or more. Alexis Robinson and Ced Gibson had two points apiece, and Jas Adams rounded out Coastal's scorers by going 1-2 at the free throw line.
Shonese Jones paced the Bulldogs with 27 points, including 20 in the first half. Jones finished 10-15 from the floor, including 5-9 from three-point range. KJ Weaver (15 points), Tianna Knuckles (13 points) and Kahila Webb (11 points) also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs. Weaver additionally led Asheville with eight rebounds.
As was the case the first time the teams met this season, turnovers and a lack of rebounds are what plagued the Chants. UNCA topped the Chants on the boards 42-33, including 15 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points. The Chants also coughed the ball up 22 times, resulting in 26 points for the Bulldogs.
Coastal's field goal shooting dropped from 47.4 percent in the first half to 25.0 percent in the second, and the Chants finished the game going 16-47 (34.0 percent) from the field. Asheville closed the game shooting 45.9 percent (28-61).
The game was close up until the 7:06 mark of the first half, where the Chants trailed 26-22. Asheville then closed the period on a 19-5 run that included nine points from Jones.
Jones started the second half with a layup to put Asheville ahead 47-27, and the Bulldogs led by 20 points or more for the remainder of the game as they went 20-27 from the line in the second half after the Chants were booked for 16 personal fouls.
