Radford Fends Off Coastal's Second Half Rally

Box Score Feb. 5, 2015

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fought to pull within two points on three separate occasions over the course of the second half, but could not overtake Radford as the visiting Highlanders (12-10, 9-4) took a 52-43 win over the Chanticleers (10-12, 4-9) Thursday night at The HTC Center.

The Highlanders led by as many as 12 points in the opening minutes of the second half, but a streak of nine straight points from Anna Vogt, as well as clutch free throws from Stephanie Isaacs and Jas Adams, cut Radford's lead to 35-33 with 8:37 left in the game. The Highlanders countered with layups from Jordynn Gaymon and Kiera McIvor, but a pair of free throws and a jumper from AJ Jordan brought the Chants within two once again with 6:08 to go.

The two-point margin lasted for around 90 seconds before Radford used an 8-2 run to pull away and effectively seal the win.

Jordan led all players in scoring with 16 points, shooting 53.8 percent (7-13) from the field and hitting both free throw attempts. Vogt followed with 15 points, and was Coastal's second-leading rebounder with seven boards.

Alexis Robinson was kept off the scoreboard for the first time in almost a month, but led the Chants in rebounding for the second straight game with 12 boards. Jas Adams tallied eight points, hitting two field goals and going a perfect 4-4 from the line. Adams also dished out a team-leading three assists.

Gaymon had her second big performance against the Chants this season, leading Radford with 14 points and completing the double-double with 11 rebounds. Aisha Foy followed with 12 points, while Jayda Worthy led all players with 14 boards.

The Chants led the Highlanders 8-2 after the game's first five minutes. Jordan hit a mid-range jumper to open the scoring, and Vogt took care of the rest, knocking down four free throws before rolling one in from the paint. Coastal then faced a five minute scoring drought, during which time Radford evened the score with two baskets from Gaymon and a layup from McIvor.

Coastal took one last lead in the game after Jordan hit her second jumper at 10:22 of the first to make it 10-8. Radford then closed the first half outscoring the Chants 14-2 to take sizable 22-12 lead into the locker room. The Chants' 12 points were the lowest scoring total in a half this year.

As has been the trend all season, Coastal was unable to muster a comeback after trailing at the break, and is 0-11 when surrendering a first-half lead to the opposition.

Unlike the first meeting between the sides this season, the Chants and Highlanders were evenly matched statistically. Each team finished shooting 31 percent from the field, and Radford held a slight 38-37 advantage in rebounding. The most telling difference was in turnovers, as Radford gave the ball away just 14 times to Coastal's 23.

Coastal's best performance of the night was at the free throw line, where the Chants converted 17 of their 18 chances.

Coastal has a quick turnaround before its next game as the Chants travel to Liberty to take on the league-leading Flames for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday at the Vines Center.
