Coastal Uses Second-Half Surge to Defeat Cincinnati, 12-10

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team overcame a 7-5 halftime deficit to defeat the Cincinnati Bearcats by a final score 12-10 on Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Each team scored a pair of goals to start the second half and Cincinnati held a 9-7 lead with 22:28 to play, but the Chanticleers used a flurry of five goals in a 10:08 span to assume a 12-9 lead with 9:24 remaining. Junior attacks Sara Nolan and Keri White combined to score four of the five goals in the comeback effort while sophomore midfielder Alicia Geiter netted the other.

Also during the comeback effort, the Coastal Carolina defense and sophomore goalie Jenna Stover held the Bearcats scoreless for a span of 21:09 before they were able to capitalize on man-up goal with 1:19 to play. However, the Chants maintained possession for the remainder of the game and secured the win.

Despite being outshot 29-19 during the game, Coastal was efficient offensively as 14 of its 19 shots were on-target and 12 resulted in goals. Nolan and White led the offensive output with four and three goals, respectively, to go along with three draw controls apiece. Sophomore midfielder Maggie Carr also continued her consistent play as she scored three points on one goal and two assists and junior midfielder Morgan Gott added a pair of goals.

All in all, the back-and-forth game saw five ties and three lead changes while the largest lead of the game by either team was three goals - Coastal's 12-9 lead at the 9:24 mark of the second half.

With the victory, Coastal Carolina improved to 3-3 on the season while Cincinnati fell to 2-6. It was the Chants second consecutive win after dropping three of four games to start the season and marks the earliest point in the program's history in which they recorded their third win of the season. Additionally, the win marks the Chanticleers' first in three games against Cincinnati.

The Chanticleers' next four games are on the road, starting with a trip to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. They begin conference play with a game at Longwood on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. and will return home to host High Point on Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m.
