Coastal Carolina-Clemson Highlights

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina hit three home runs, including a grand slam by David Parrett, to claim a 9-5 victory versus Clemson Tuesday night before a sellout crowd of 2,825 at Springs Brooks Stadium. (The crowd is the largest on-campus crowd in CCU history.)

The Chanticleers, winners of five straight, improved to 14-6 overall and 4-0 versus Atlantic Coast Conference teams this season. Previously this season, the Chants defeated #28 Georgia Tech (7-5), North Carolina State (12-3) and #11 North Carolina (13-2). Clemson, making their first trip to Coastal Carolina's campus since 1994, falls to 9-10. The Tigers still own a 43-9 advantage in the all-time series and lead CCU 9-4 when playing on the Grand Strand.

G.K. Young and Tyler Chadwick each added solo home runs while Anthony Marks, Young and Parrett paced the CCU offense with two hits apiece.

Clemson made it interesting in the middle innings, getting to within two runs in the top of the sixth. However, Chanticleer reliever Bobby Holmes was dominant over the final 4.1 innings as he struck out a career-high six batters. The freshman recorded his first career save as he allowed two hits, which led to Clemson's final run being scored in the sixth, before retiring 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. (The one player that reached did so with two outs in the ninth on a Chanticleer error.)

Fellow freshman Shane Sawczak (pronounced Saw-check) earned his first career win and improved to 1-1 on the season. The lefty started and worked 3.0 innings. He allowed four hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout.

Young gave Coastal an early 1-0 lead with a two-out, solo home run to right field, his fourth blast of the season.

The Chants took a 2-0 lead in the second frame when Parrett hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single by Al Molina.

Clemson cut its deficit in half with a run in the third. Eli White hit the first pitch of the inning off the center field wall for a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI single to left field by Reed Rohlman.

Coastal exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third. Marks and Connor Owings had back-to-back hits while Casey Schroeder loaded the bases with a walk. Parrett cleared the bases with a grand slam, his fifth home run of the season and Coastal's first grand slam in the new facility. Two pitches later, Chadwick lined a solo home run off the top of the right field wall for CCU's first back-to-back home runs since Rich Witten and Tommy La Stella accomplished the feat on June 2, 2011 versus UConn in the NCAA Clemson Regional.

Undaunted, the Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-4. Chris Okey hit a leadoff single and was later driven in by Chase Pinder onan RBI single. Andrew Cox followed with a single to put runners on the corners an White brought home Pinder with an RBI ground out to third, which allowed Cox to take second. Tyler Slaton capped the scoring with an RBI single to right field.

Clemson added a run in the sixth inning to make it a two-run game. Pinder and Cox hit consecutive singles and White moved the duo up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Slaton drove in Pinder with an RBI ground out to shortstop.

Coastal then took advantage of a Clemson error to score two in the bottom of the sixth. Seth Lancaster reached on an error, Jack Curtis walked and Marks singled to load the bases. Owings plated Lancaster with a sacrifice fly and Young drove in Curtis with an RBI single.

Paul Campbell (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers. Clemson was led offensively by Pinder and Cox, each providing two hits, and Slaton drove in two.

Coastal Carolina will begin conference play this weekend at UNC Asheville.
