MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina track programs put together arguably their best collective performance of the spring season in day two of the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Myrtle Beach's Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The day's competition against the likes of South Carolina and Clemson included eight top-10 finishers, three preliminary qualifiers and a new school record for the Chanticleers.
The men's 4x200 meter relay team sprinted itself into the record books as the 1:24.36 race posted by DeAndra Lipscomb, Deion Wellington, Kahlim Denmark and Therius Styles bested a time of 1:25.84 ran by Lipscomb, Steve Carr, DeAndre Pressley and Alexander Hass in 2014. Additionally, the men's 4x800 meter relay team of Charles Bascom, Alexander Hass, Ryan Beckley and Joseph Keitt placed third in their race and helped Coastal to second-place in the Shamrock Invitational Mayor's Relay Cup standing, only one point behind South Carolina.
On the women's side, the Chanticleers also sit in second place, one point behind North Carolina A&T State, after a pair of third-place finished by the 4x200 and 4x800 meter relay teams. Christal Green, Symphony Thompson, Camille Hurley and Teka Simpson finished third after running a time of 1:37.76 in the 4x200 (second in CCU history), while Jessica Gelibert, Imani Boatwright, Kyla van Graan and Aynslee van Graan posted a time of 9:12.16 in the 4x800.
To go along with playing a role in the record-breaking relay time, Styles also ran the fastest qualifying time in the men's 100-meter preliminaries. His time of 10.63 seconds bested the field by 0.17 seconds and was good enough to set a new personal best in his young career as a Chanticleer.
Likewise, Gelibert and Hurley qualified for the women's 100-meter hurdles after finishing second and sixth with times of 13.93 and 14.39, respectively.
Additional top-10 finishers in Friday's events include Alesia Muklebust, who finished sixth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:06.46, Emma Kroger and Brianna Cristiano, who finished fourth and ninth in the women's pole vault with marks of 3.50 meters (11'7.75") and a personal-best of 3.25 meters (10'8"), respectively, and Robert Castellani, who finished sixth in the men's javelin after also throwing a personal-best 59.42 meters (194'11").
Capping off the day, two-time Olympian Amber Campbell (Coastal Carolina, 2004) broke the Doug Shaw Stadium record in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 72.81 meters (238'10) in the Amber Campbell Invitational. The record-breaking mark is good enough to qualify Campbell for the World Championships, seeing that she finishes top-three in the U.S. Championships, first.
In Thursday's competition, Ryan Minor also finished in the top-10 of the men's hammer throw after posting a mark of 55.63 meters (182'6").
The Shamrock Invitational will conclude following tomorrow's competition and the Chanticleers will look ahead to the Raleigh Relays scheduled for March 27 and 28.
