Coastal Carolina Completes Sweep at UNC Asheville

Box Score March 22, 2015

Final Stats

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - After scoring 25 runs in the first two games of its Big South opening series, Coastal Carolina only managed a pair of runs Sunday, including one in the top of the ninth, but it was enough to claim a 2-1 victory in a sweep versus UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field.

The Chanticleers, winners of eight straight, improve to 17-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference while Asheville drops to 10-13, 1-5. Coastal Carolina will return to Springs Brooks Stadium Tuesday to host nationally ranked South Carolina at 6 pm.

With Sunday's game tied, 1-1, after eight complete innings, G.K. Young, who had two of CCU's five hits, started the ninth inning with a single to center field. After a walk to Zach Remillard put runners on first and second with no outs, Coastal elected to turn to pinch runner Josh Crump for Young at second base. Casey Schroeder moved the runners 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. David Parrett was intentionally walked to load the bases. Tyler Chadwick followed with an RBI ground out, bringing home Crump for what proved to be the winning run.

Freshman Bobby Holmes (2-0) continued his dominance on the mound. After retiring 12 of the final 13 batters he faced in getting the save versus Clemson earlier in the week, Holmes sat down all 10 batters over 3.1 innings Sunday, with two strikeouts in the ninth, to earn the win.

Asheville took its first lead of the series with a run in the bottom of the third. Eric Connolly hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out, RBI single by Joe Tietjen for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Coastal tied the game with a tally in the sixth. Anthony Marks, who had two hits on the day, started the frame with an infield single. After a Michael Paez sacrifice bunt, Marks scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Young.

The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on second and third, but Holmes came in and retired the first of his 10 batters faced to keep the game tied.
