CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team earned its third conference win of the season by defeating the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 17-7 on Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Coastal Carolina's offense took time to get going as they fell behind 2-0 to Gardner-Webb after goals from Alex Fusco and Lindsay Lippert and failed to get on the scoreboard until the 19:16 mark of the first half. However, the Chanticleers proceeded to score six consecutive goals and eight of the game's next nine goals to take an 8-3 lead into intermission.
Again, the Runnin' Bulldogs came out firing to start the second half as they scored a pair of goals to cut Coastal's lead to 8-5. However, the Chanticleers went on another run as they outscored Gardner-Webb 9-2 in the final 21:10 of the game on runs of three and six consecutive goals.
The Chanticleers maintained possession for much of the game as they outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 44-20 and won the draw control battle by a final margin of 24-3. Nine of the draw controls were won by junior defender Maddy Ciardi, matching a program record previously recorded by Sara Nolan.
Also for Coastal Carolina, junior attack Keri White put forth another impressive offensive performance as she matched her career high with five goals to go along with three assists. White's eight points in the game are a season high for the Chanticleers and set a new Coastal Carolina single-game record, breaking Sara Nolan and Lily Yednock's previous mark of seven points. Additionally, sophomore midfielder Maggie Carr recorded two goals to go along with a career-high three assists. Her three assists are tied for the most by a Chanticleer this season and mark her team-leading fourth multi-assist game of the year.
On the opposite end, Fusco led the Runnin' Bulldogs with five points on three goals and two assists, all career highs for the freshman from Marietta, Ga.
With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in Big South play, while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-14 and 0-5 in conference. The Chanticleers' three conference wins thus far match last season's win total in conference play.
The Chanticleers will wrap up their home schedule as they host the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to first draw, seniors Jen Cosgrove and Lily Yednock will be honored with a recognition ceremony scheduled to begin at approximately 12:45 p.m.
