Final Stats

CLINTON - Casey Schroeder, a three-run shot in the seventh inning, and David Parrett, a two-run blast in the ninth, each hit their 10th home runs of the season to lead #24 Coastal Carolina to an 8-6 victory at Presbyterian College Friday afternoon.

The Chanticleers (28-13, 12-4 Big South) overcame three errors that led to four unearned runs to rally past the Blue Hose (23-19, 4-12).

Schroeder and Parrett each had two hits, as did Michael Paez, Zach Remillard and Tyler Chadwick.

Junior Mike Morrison, a fixture in the Chanticleer bullpen, made his first collegiate start as CCU was without normal Friday starter Alex Cunningham, who is 6-0 this season and is out this weekend with an injury. Morrison pitched well, getting five strikeouts with one walk in five innings, but CCU errors led to five runs with two being earned. Bobby Holmes entered the game with two outs in the sixth and was dominant, despite allowing an unearned run on CCU's third error of the contest. Holmes allowed two hits and struck out four in 2.0 innings. Andrew Beckwith (4-2) earned the win, retiring all four batters he faced.

Presbyterian struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Tyler Weyenberg hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after a pair of wild pitches. Jay Lizanich then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's first run.

Coastal answered with a run in the top of the second. G.K. Young drew a leadoff walk and Schroeder followed with a single to left field. After a Parrett sacrifice bunt, Chadwick delivered an RBI single to right field. For Parrett, who is tied for the team lead in home runs, it marked his seventh sac bunt of the season, which ranks second on the team, with the runner he advanced with those bunts scoring six times.

The Chants added a tally in the third. Paez hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a Connor Owings sac bunt. Remillard followed with a double, but Paez was only able to advance to third as he had to see if the outfielder could make the play. Young then hit the first pitch he saw in the frame to right field to bring home Paez on the sacrifice fly.

In the home half of the third, Weyenberg singled, advanced to second on a hit-and-run ground out. Jay Lizanich hit a slow roller to shortstop, but a bad hop led to an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blue Hose took advantage of two CCU errors to score three runs in the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk, Jacob Midkiff reached on an error on what could have been a double play. AJ Priaulx laid down a sac bunt to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Coastal looked to escape unscathed with a ground ball, but a second error on a Brandon Martin ground ball allowed two runs to score. Martin stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Weyenberg collected his third hit in as many at bats, this one a slow roller to second base to plate Martin.

The Chants got a run back in the top of the sixth. Parrett drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI double from Jack Curtis.

Coastal had an impressive two-out rally in the top of the seventh versus PC's best relief pitcher, Russell Thompson. After getting two quick outs, Remillard drew a 3-2 walk and Young was hit by a pitch. Then the first pitch Schroeder saw, he deposited the ball over the right field wall to give Coastal a 6-5 lead. Each of Schroeder's last three blasts have been a three-run shots, including a game-winning round-tripper at Wake Forest (Mar. 31) and one earlier this week at College of Charleston.

An error allowed Presbyterian to tie the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the seventh. Lizanich hit a leadoff double. Cam McRae hit a ground ball, but a throwing error put runners on second and third. Ryan Hendrick fought off a ball that found its way into center, driving home Lizanich. However, Holmes bounced back to strikeout the side to limit the damage.

The Chants used a similar formula from the seventh inning - a hit batter and home run - to score two runs in the ninth. With two outs, Schroeder was hit by a pitch. Then, Parrett hooked a 2-2 pitch inside the left field pole to give Coastal an 8-6 lead.

Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian are scheduled to play game two of the series at 2 pm on Saturday.
