CLINTON - Zach Remillard went 3-for-4 with four RBI while Shane Sawczak struck out a career-high seven to lead #24 Coastal Carolina to a 9-2 win as the Chanticleers swept both a Sunday doubleheader and the weekend series at Presbyterian College.
With the sweep, Coastal improves to 30-13 overall and is now in a three-way tie for first place with a 14-4 Big South record. The Blue Hose fall to 23-21, 4-14. The Chanticleers will continue its road swing with a Tuesday contest at nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington, followed by a three-game weekend series at nationally-ranked Florida State.
Remillard was 4-for-8 with five RBI in the Sunday doubleheader, while Anthony Marks was 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two of the doubleheader.
Sawczak had the best outing of his young career as the freshman improved to 2-3. He pitched 5.0 scoreless innings and, entering the game with just 15 strikeouts in 25 innings, fanned seven with two walks and four hits.
Coastal got on the scoreboard first with a run in the third inning. G.K. Young had a two-out single and scored from first on an RBI double by Remillard.
The Chants padded their advantage with four runs in the fourth. Tyler Chadwick hit a leadoff double and advanced to third when Jack Curtis reached on a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt. Marks followed with an RBI single and CCU loaded the bases on a bunt single from Michael Paez. Curtis came home after Connor Owings was hit by a pitch. After a double play, Remillard lined a two-strike, two-out single to center to drive in Paez and Owings.
After PC threatened but kept off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, Coastal rode the defensive momentum to add to its lead with a run in the sixth. Young drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Remillard.
Presbyterian took advantage of three hits and two wild pitches to scratch the scoreboard for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Guy Casaceli and Tyler Weyenberg each singled. The pair moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch then Casaceli scored one pitch later on another wild pitch. Billy Motroni followed with a slow roller to third to drive in Weyenberg.
Coastal answered with two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 9-2 lead. Owings walked and scored on a double by Young. Young took third on a sac bunt from Remillard and later scored on a passed ball.
Tanner Chock (2-3) suffered the loss.
