BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Nick Thayer did not allow a hit through five innings and three Camel pitchers combined to surrender four hits on the day as Campbell claimed a 5-2 victory over #25 Coastal Carolina Friday at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Camels (31-22, 12-11) and Chanticleers (34-18, 16-7) will conclude the regular season on Saturday with first pitch set for 4:30 pm. The game will be televised on American Sports Network.
Thayer (6-5) walked two and struck out four to get the win. Coley Thompkins allowed one hit and one run in one inning while Grant Yost recorded his first save by allowing three hits and one run in 3.0 innings of work.
The Camels ended a 0-0 stalemate with back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Taylor singled through the left side of the infield, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI double from Cedric Mullins. Steven Leonard followed with a single to right field to drive in Mullins.
Coastal answered with a run in the sixth. Anthony Marks reached on a fielder's choice and Michael Paez, who had two of CCU's four hits, recorded CCU's first hit of the game to move Marks to second. After a wild pitch, Connor Owings hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Marks.
Campbell opened the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff walk by Austin Beard. Mullins then it his second double of the game to put runners on second and third. Leonard brought home Beard with a single to right-center field. A throwing error allowed Mullins to score and put Leonard on third, Kyle Leady chopped an RBI single up the middle.
The Chants provided the 5-2 final with a run in the eighth. David Parrett hit a leadoff single and, with two outs, Paez reached on an infield single. Owings followed with an RBI single to left-center field.
Shane Sawczak (3-4) pitched well but suffered the loss. The freshman scattered eight hits over five innings, allowing two runs and no walks with two strikeouts.
