IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell to Iowa in three sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-21) in its final match of the Holiday Inn Hawkeye Challenge on Saturday.
The Chanticleers close tournament play with a 7-4 overall record, and face one more nonconference opponent in South Carolina before entering Big South play.
Saturday's loss to Iowa is the second in as many days for the Chants.
For the second consecutive match Leah Hardeman led Coastal in kills with nine while hitting .381. Lian Bernett followed with seven kills and a team-leading .429 hitting percentage. As a team Coastal hit .226 for the match.
Regan Davey led Iowa's attack with 14 kills and helped the Hawkeyes to a .371 team hitting percentage. Jess Janota and Lauren Brobst also finished with double figure kills, putting down 12 and 11, respectively.
Iowa pulled out to an 11-7 lead in the first set before Coastal used its first timeout. Coming out of the break, the Hawkeyes won four of the next seven points, forcing Coastal to use its second timeout. The Chants managed just two points for the remainder of the set as Iowa took a 1-0 match lead.
Coastal played Iowa tighter in the second set, hitting .300 while out-blocking the Hawkeyes 3-1. Davey and Janota, however, combined for 14 kills to propel Iowa to the 25-20 set win.
The Chants trailed by just a point in the third set before Iowa went on a 7-2 run to open up the game. Coastal managed to pull within two points as Iowa led 23-21 toward the end of the game, but two Hawkeye kills closed out the match.
Coastal closes its nonconference schedule on Tuesday at in-state rival South Carolina. First serve between the Chants and Gamecocks is set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 and SEC+.
