Daufuskie Island - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team played its first round of the 2015-16 season Sunday and stand in eighth place after an opening-round 306 at the Rees Jones Invitational, played at the Jones Signature Course at Haig Point Club (par 72, 7.380 yards).
The Rees Jones Invitational is a three-day event and will feature 18 holes on Monday and a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Campbell and Furman are co-leaders in the 10-team field after the opening 18 holes, each carding a five-over par 293. Charlotte (294), Liberty (295) and host Kennesaw State (298) round out the top five.
Coastal Carolina Olle Widegren is leading the Chanticleers. The junior, who reeled off four straight birdies Sunday, is one of nine golfers tied for 10th after an opening-round 2-over par 74. Furman's Preston Cole is the individual leader with a 2-under 70 on Sunday.
Ryan Carpenter is two strokes behind Widegren, shooting a 76 and standing in a tie for 27th. Alfredo Ruiz is one back of Carpenter. Ruiz posted a 77 and is tied for 32nd. His brother, freshman Luis Ruiz, is tied for 37th after a first-round 79.
Thadd Obecny II rounded out CCU's fivesome with an 80 and he is tied for 40th. Harrison Frye, playing as an individual, is in 47th thanks to an 82.
