CONWAY - Coastal Carolina managed to cut an 11-point fourth quarter deficit down to one with just over a minute remaining in regulation, but two late turnovers denied the Chanticleers an opportunity to overtake Liberty in a tight 65-63 loss Tuesday night at The HTC Center.
The loss is Coastal's fourth straight at home against a Big South opponent, and drops the Chants to 7-10, 2-6 on the season. Liberty moves to 9-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference as the Flames enter a five-way tie for first place with UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Presbyterian.
Liberty's 11-point lead -- the largest of the game for the Flames -- with 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter was erased in less than three minutes as Coastal strung together a 10-0 run to pull within one point with 3:56 to go.
After trading baskets over the next several possessions, Liberty found itself with another one-point lead with 1:11 remaining. Derriel Banyard then blocked a shot by Mickayla Sanders on Liberty's next possession, giving Coastal the ball and a chance to take the lead with 44 seconds to play. A traveling call on Jas Adams, however, turned the ball back over to Liberty and Jaymee Fisher-Davis hit a free throw to extend Liberty's lead to two. Another travel by Yasmin Miller with 11 seconds left allowed Liberty to seal the game on a pair of free throws by Sanders.
The game featured five ties and six lead changes as the scoring margin stayed within five points for the majority of the game.
Coastal relied mainly on its outside shooting, hitting 12 of a season-high 36 (33.3 percent) attempts from beyond the arc. The Chants added nine more baskets from inside to finish 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the field overall.
Liberty more than doubled Coastal's attempts at the free throw line as the Flames went 21-of-33 from the stripe, compared to 9-of-15 for the Chants. Several Coastal players were in foul trouble throughout the game. Jamie Williams and Stephanie Isaacs each fouled out in the fourth quarter, and a total of six Coastal players -- including all five starters -- were booked for three or more fouls.
Four Chants reached double figures on the scoreboard. Miller led the team with 13 points on 5-of-12 from the field with a trio of 3-pointers. Stephanie Isaacs tallied 12 points, all from shots beyond the arc. Adams added two 3's of her own and notched 11 points, while Nicole Isaacs had 10 points on a pair of treys and four free throws. Adams was also the Chants' leading rebounder with nine.
Catherine Kearney led the Flames with 16 points and added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Sadalia Ellis added 14 points, and Katelyn Adams led the game with 16 rebounds.
Each side opened the game shooting just below 35 percent from the field, resulting in a slim 14-13 lead for the Flames at the end of the first quarter.
Coastal then dominated the second, outscoring Liberty 22-12 and using a 13-3 run to build its largest lead of the night at 12 points with 1:32 left before the halftime break. It was Coastal's largest lead over the Flames since leading by 10 points in what ended up as a 57-38 loss on Jan. 25, 2010.
The second quarter saw six 3-pointers, four of which came off the fingers of Chanticleers.
Coastal's nine-point lead at the half was erased six minutes into the third quarter when Liberty tied the game at 40-40 before taking the lead a short while later. The Flames went in front for good at 2:17 of the third when Ellis hit a pair of free throws to take a 43-42 lead.
Liberty ended the third quarter with a 47-45 lead before scoring the first nine points of the fourth.
The loss is Coastal's 45th straight to Flames dating back to the 1996-97 season. The streak remains the second longest against a conference opponent in NCAA Division I women's basketball, following the 59 straight losses of Washington State to Stanford.
The Chants have two more games remaining in the month of January, both on the road. Coastal heads to Presbyterian for a 2 p.m. tip on Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. game at Campbell on Jan. 30. The game at Campbell marks the beginning of Coastal's second go-around through the Big South Conference.
