BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Rachael Gregory scored 19 points to match her career high, and Yasmin Miller added 16 as the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team scraped out a 59-56 victory Saturday afternoon at Gardner-Webb's Paul Porter Arena.
The win is Coastal's first of the season against a Big South opponent, moving its league record to 1-3, and overall record to 6-7. Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, drops to 7-6, 1-2 with the loss. It was the third win for Coastal in eight games at Paul Porter Arena.
The game was tied, 55-55, with 2:06 remaining before Gregory hit her final layup of the afternoon to put Coastal ahead by two. Gardner-Webb's Olvia Parker then split a pair of free throws to cut the Chants' lead to one with 1:16 to go. GWU missed a jumper on its next possession, allowing Coastal an opportunity to run down the clock. However, a miscue on an inbounds pass following a timeout gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the ball back with 12 seconds remaining. GWU's Alexus Hill was called for an offensive foul during her attempt to tie the game, and Nicole Isaacs hit the following free throws to seal the win.
Gregory's 19 points ââ'¬" 13 of which were scored in the second half ââ'¬" came on 9-of-13 from the floor with one free throw. Gregory also led the Chants with nine rebounds, one shy of becoming the first Chant to record a double-double this season.
Miller got half of her point total from the field where she finished 4-of-9, and the other half at the free throw line where she led Coastal making 8-of-10 attempts.
Ced Gibson was limited to three points, but led all players with seven assists.
Coastal finished the game 20-of-49 (40.8 percent) from the field, the sixth game this season the Chants have shot 40 percent or higher. Gardner-Webb shot 37.9 percent from the field, and both teams struggled from the free throw line as each side finished below 60 percent from the stripe.
The first half featured back-and-forth action with six lead changes as neither team managed to build a lead larger than five points. Coastal led for 8:53 of the first half and Gardner-Webb stayed in front for an even eight minutes, with the remaining three minutes were spent tied.
Coastal's five-point lead in the opening half came in the midst of a 10-2 Chanticleer run that spanned just under two minutes midway through the second quarter. Miller and Gregory rolled in consecutive layups to start the run and put Coastal in front 16-15. Adams then worked her way to the free throw line where she hit her first shot before missing the second. Gregory grabbed the offensive rebound, however, and hit her third field goal of the half. Gibson capped the run with a 3-pointer after a jumper by GWU's Brown to put Coastal ahead 22-17.
The Chants' offensive surge stalled there, however, as Coastal managed just one more field goal before going scoreless for the remaining 3:41 of the half. Coastal's scoreless streak allowed Gardner-Webb to take slim 25-24 advantage going into the halftime break.
The second half was fairly even as Coastal shot one percent better than GWU from the field and grabbed two more rebounds. The difference came at the free throw line where Coastal converted 12 of its 18 opportunities, while Gardner-Webb managed four makes on just seven attempts.
The score was tied three times in the second half, and changed sides seven times.
Coastal returns to the hardwood on Monday as the Chants host Longwood for a 7 p.m. Big South matchup at The HTC Center. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
