Coastal Carolina Game Notes

Last Time Out
• After leading by as many as 12 in the early stages of the second half, Coastal Carolina hung on down the stretch as Shivaughn Wiggins made a pair of crucial free throws and High Point's Lorenzo Cugini's last-second 3-pointer clanked off the rim, leaving the Chanticleers with a 71-68 victory.
• Coastal, the two-time reigning Big South Tournament champion, improved to 10-8 (4-4 Big South) on the season and broke the Panthers 12-game home winning streak. High Point, which has won at least a share of the last three Big South regular season titles, dropped to 12-6 overall (5-2 Big South).
• Elijah Wilson led all scorers with 21 points, while also corralling a career-high tying nine rebounds. The junior outdueled the Big South's Preseason Player of the Year in High Point's John Brown, who finished 18 points. Also in double-figures for Coastal was Jaylen Shaw with 14 and HPU's Adam Weary with 19.
• The Chanticleers shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the field, including a 56.3 percent clip (9-16) from 3-point range. Defensively, Coastal limited High Point to a 40.0 overall shooting percentage and only 18.2 percent (4-22 from) deep. Coastal also controlled the boards 38-32.

The Series vs. Charleston Southern
• Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern have met 68 times on the basketball court with the Chanticleers leading 36-32, including wins in seven of the last 10 games.
• The Chants are 17-14 when playing on the road at CSU, but have not won on the Bucs' home floor since Jan. 7, 2012 (80-77 (OT)).
• CCU and Charleston Southern split last season's two meetings with each holding serve on its home floor. The Chants won 83-74 in Conway with departed seniors Warren Gillis and Josh Cameron leading the way with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The Buccaneers won in Charleston by an 83-72 score as eventual Big South Player of the Year Saah Nimley led four Bucs in double-figure with 24 points.

Notes From The High Point Game
• Coastal Carolina led wire-to-wire in a 71-68 win over High Point, marking the Chants third consecutive victory over the Panthers. The Chanticleer win also snapped HPU's 12-game home win streak. Moreover, HPU has lost only three of its last 31 home game with two of those coming at the hands of the Chanticleers.
• Elijah Wilson produced his most efficient effort of the season in scoring a game-high 21 points -- his fourth 20-plus point game of the season. The junior shot 7-of-10 from field, including 4-of-5 from three, and made 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. He also corralled nine rebounds, tying his career-high which was originally set during CCU's double overtime win against Charleston Southern in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Big South Tournament.
• Jaylen Shaw added 14 points (6-10, 2-2 3PT) and dished out a game-best seven assists. The 60 percent shooting day raised Shaw's season shooting percentage to a team-high 50.6 percent, tops among Chanticleers that have at least 75 attempts.
• The combination of Badou Diagne and Marcus Freeman limited HPU's John Brown, the Preseason Player of the Year, to hard-earned 18 points and held the high-flier without one of his usual momentum-sparking dunks.
• Coastal also defensively frustrated the Panther's Lorenzo Cugini, who entered the game as the NCAA's leading 3-point shooter, to a meager 1-of-7 shooting effort from deep.

Shutting Down The Big South's Top Scorers
• Coastal Carolina has faced the Big South's top two leading scorers -- Presbyterian's DeSean Murray and Winthrop Keon Johnson -- and proceeded to shut down both scorers, holding each to less than half of their season averages.
• Winthrop's Johnson entered the HTC Center on Jan. 2 leading the Big South at 21.3 points per game, but was held to just 10 points on 11 shots by Coastal's guards.
• Presbyterian's Murray also entered the Jan. 14 game against Coastal leading the Big South with 21.4 points per outing, but too was limited to only 10 points on 11 shots as Coastal's Badou Diagne and Marcus Freeman heavily contested every shot.
• Coastal's defensive play not only frustrated Johnson and Murry, but their teammates as well. The Chanticleers dominated both games, winning 82-63 against Winthrop and 87-58 against Presbyterian.
• Coastal was unable to fully shut down Preseason Player of the Year John Brown of High Point (Jan. 16). Although the Chants did hold the redshirt senior below his season scoring average and kept the SportsCenter Top 10 regular without a dunk.

Sharing the Scoring Load
• Through 18 games Coastal Carolina has four players averaging double figures led by Elijah Wilson's 13.9 points per game. Badou Diagne averages 12.3, Jaylen Shaw 11.5 and Shivaughn Wiggins 10.3. Comparatively at this point last season only three Chants -- Josh Cameron (13.7), Warren Gillis (12.7) and Shivaughn Wiggins (10.7) -- were averaging double-figures.
• This season the Chanticleers have not dropped a game, going 8-0, when at least four Chants breach the 10 point threshold. The Chants are 4-0 when four players score in double-figures and 4-0 when five reach the plateau.

Lending The Helping Hand
• Chanticleer guards Jaylen Shaw, Shivaughn Wiggins have had no problem sharing the basketball this season. The duo created numerous open shot for their teammates and have dished out 148 assists through 18 games.
• Shaw has notched a team-high 83 helpers this season -- good for second most in the Big South (Radford's Rashaun Davis leads with 94). He has six games with at least seven assists.
• Wiggins has 65 dimes on the season, including a career-high nine against Presbyterian (Jan. 14). The junior also has both a seven- and eight-assist game, recording seven assists at Campbell (Nov. 28) and eight against Winthrop (Jan. 2).
• Shaw and Wiggins are two of the top-10 assists per game leaders in the Big South. Shaw ranks second with 4.61 assists per game, while Wiggins ranks third with 4.06 helpers a game.
• Wiggins and Shaw are also top-five in the Big South in assist/turnover ratio, ranking third (2.03) and fourth (1.98), respectively.

Up Next
• Coastal Carolina returns home on Wed., Jan. 27 to face Big South-leading UNC Asheville. Tipoff from inside the HTC Center is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be streamed live on the Big South Network.
