CHARLESTON - Coastal Carolina starting guards Shivaughn Wiggins and Jaylen Shaw combined to score 45 points and the Chanticleers spent much of the game leading by 20-plus in a 78-63 win at Charleston Southern Saturday evening.

Wiggins poured in a game-high 23 points as he made 6-of-9 shots, including two threes, and 9-of-11 at the free-throw line. Shaw scored a career-high 22 points on eight makes, including a trio of 3-pointers and three free throws. Elijah Wilson as finished in double-figures with 13 points as the Chanticleers improved to 11-8 on the season and 5-4 in Big South play.

Charleston Southern (8-12, 4-5 Big South) was led by Javis Howard's and Armel Potter's 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Chanticleers shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field to count their first win inside the CSU Field House since January 2012. Defensively, Coastal limited CSU to a 38.5 overall shooting percentage and only 25.0 percent (6-24) from deep. Coastal also controlled the boards 43-38.

Coastal led 20-12 midway through the first half before Ron Trapps made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push the Chants lead into double digits at 26-12. Charleston Southern outscored Coastal 11-10 over the next five minutes as Melvin Brooks' lay-in at the 3:33 mark made the score 36-23.

Coastal stymied the Charleston Southern offense over the last three minutes, holding the Buccaneers without a point on 0-of-8 from the field. Meanwhile, Wiggins and Shaw each counted a 3-pointer and Marcus Freeman beat the halftime buzzer with a lay-in, giving the Chanticleers a 44-23 halftime lead.

Coastal's first half was very efficient as the Chants made 18-of-40 shots, dished out eight assists against only two turnover and outrebounded the Buccaneers 27-17.

Coastal took a 54-32 lead on Shaw's reverse lay-in with 15:31 to go in regulation, but Charleston Southern quickly cut the Chants lead to 54-42 with a 10-0 run. The Buccaneer run, which featured a full-court press by the Bucs and several turnovers by Coastal, sparked momentum for the home team and incited the capacity crowd.

However, that momentum would not last as the Chanticleers answered with an 11-0 run to restore a 21-point advantage at 63-42 with 10:13 to play. Coastal's lead ballooned to as many as 25 with a pair of Wiggins free throw at the 5:10 mark, making the score 73-48. The Chants then went to their bench and Charleston Southern scored 15 of the game's final 20 points, leaving Coastal with the 78-63 final margin.

Coastal Carolina returns home on Wed., Jan. 27 to face Big South-leading UNC Asheville. Tipoff from inside the HTC Center is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be streamed live on the Big South Network.
