Boone, N.C. - Henrik Muller's first goal of the season made Coastal Carolina a road winner in a 2-1 overtime win at Appalachian State.
It was Coastal's third overtime match of the season, but was CCU's first win in extra time as the first two matches ended in draws.
CCU (5-5-3/ 1-1-1 SBC) looked to have the match in hand as Jair Espinoza and Ryan Reid teamed to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the match. It was Espinoza's second goal of the season and Reid's first assist.
The visiting Chants carried the one goal lead into halftime and into the 81st minute before a Stephen Chapman goal evened the score and ultimately sent the game into an extra period.
Only a little over two minutes had run off the clock when Muller boomed in a crossing shot past the Appalachian State (4-6-3/1-1-1 SBC) goalie for the match winner.
The win continues an impressive run by Coastal over the past seven matches as the Chanticleers have gone 4-1-2 during that time period.
CCU will be back in action Saturday Oct. 22 when they play host to Howard University at CCU Soccer Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
The match is free to the public, but is one of many events the CCU Athletic Department has set aside as part of the Hurricane Matthew Relief Drive. Items will be accepted at the match to distribute to those who were affected by the hurricane. For a complete list of items requested during the drive go to GOCCUsports.com.
