BELTON, S.C. - Vuk Velickovic and Luiz Faria finished second and fourth, respectively, in the main singles draw, and the pair finished second in the doubles draw over the weekend at the South Carolina Men's Collegiate Championships.
Velickovic opened with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Presbyterian's Castillo-Lopez, and followed with straight-sets wins against Liberty's Springer, Winthrop's Dias and Presbyterian's Lykou to reach the championship match. There, he fell 6-4, 6-5 to the eventual singles champions, Diego Quiroz of Winthrop.
Faria advanced to the semifinals of the main singles draw with a trio of straight-sets wins, downing The Citadel's Hobson (6-0, 6-0), Presbyterian's Roberts (6-2, 6-2) and his own teammate, Sebastian Schneider, 7-5, 6-4. Faria also suffered a loss to Quiroz (6-2, 6-3), putting him in the third-place match against Lykou where he fell 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Quiroz stymied the Chants a third time in the doubles draw as he and partner Gabriel Dias topped Faria and Velickovic in the championship match. The Chant duo advanced to the final with wins against pairs from Wofford and Presbyterian, and a mixed pair of players from Furman and South Carolina playing together.
The Chants finished the weekend with a 15-9 overall record in both singles and doubles.
"It was another solid team effort and we're very happy that we were able to make championship runs in both singles and doubles," said assistant coach Mo Hookaylo. "Unfortunately we came up a bit short, but this weekend was just another example of the strides forward this team is taking."
