CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coastal Carolina senior Alfredo Ruiz was declared medalist at the Tar Heel Invitational as the event's final round was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew.
Ruiz, along with UNC Greensboro's Jake McGlone, were tied for first after 36 holes on Friday as each posted a 6-under par 138. Saturday's final round was originally pushed back to Sunday. However, conditions after the hurricane left the course unplayable.
Coastal Carolina placed ninth with a two-round total of 583. UNC Wilmington won the 13-team event with a score of 567.
Ruiz, who placed second by one stroke in his first event of the season, shot a career-low 68 in the opening round and followed with a 2-under 70 Thursday afternoon for his score of 138.
It marks the first medalist honor for Ruiz. All five of his rounds this season have been under par this season and he is averaging an impressive 69.2 strokes through two events.
