CONWAY - Coastal Carolina University men's basketball coach Cliff Ellis has announced the addition of Ajay Sanders to the 2017-18 Chanticleers program during the early signing period.
Sanders will transfer to CCU following his two-year career at Olney Central College. The Winterville, N.C., native is a 6'-4" shooting guard and is presently averaging over 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game.
Ajay played for Coach Mike Burris at Olney who said, "Ajay is a versatile guard with the ability to play and defend multiple positions. He is off to a great start for us and is not only producing numbers, but showing great leadership for our team."
"He is an excellent rebounder who plays hard. He is a great student with high character who will represent CCU well on and off the floor. He is excited to get closer to home while playing for a legendary coach in Coach Ellis."
Sanders spent his high school career playing for Coach Rob Salter at Greenfield School where he averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists per outing. He also had three steals per game and added two blocked shots.
He was named to the NCISAA All-State Team and the Coastal Plain Independent All Conference Team and the Wilson Daily Times First Team.
I am very excited to see Ajay achieve his dream to go to Coastal," Salter said. Ajay plays very hard and does all the little things that helps his team win. Ajay can score the ball, can defend the wing, and is a very good rebounder for his position. I think his best basketball is ahead of him."
Ajay was a strong recruit for Coach Ellis and the staff and they are glad to see him decide to play at Coastal.
"We are very excited to add AJay to our basketball family," Ellis said. "We will lose two senior wings going into next year. Having played in junior college, AJay gives us experience moving forward. He is a big guard that has basketball savvy and does so many things well. He can really shoot the basketball, is a very good passer, and rebounds extremely well for a guard. AJay is a young man of great character and a very good student, just a great addition to our program."
