CONWAY - Naheria Hamilton recorded Coastal Carolina's first double-double of the season, and three other Chants reached double figures in scoring as the women's basketball team won its season home opener, 66-50, over North Carolina Central Tuesday night at the HTC Center.
Rachael Gregory led Coastal (1-1) in scoring with 17 points and, for the second straight game, missed a double-double opportunity by one rebound. Gregory's nine boards followed only the 11 of Hamilton, who added 10 points for her first career double-double in only her second game in a Chanticleer uniform.
Jas Adams finished second in scoring with 12 points, and Yasmin Miller rounded out Coastal's double figure scorers with 11 points, eight of which came in the first half.
NCCU's (0-2) Morgan Jones led the game with 18 points, finishing 7-of-20 from the floor with four 3-pointers. The next closest Eagle was Dominique Adams with nine points.
NCCU scored the opening points just 35 second into the game to take its only lead of the night. That lead was quickly erased, however, as Coastal scored 13 straight to stake a comfortable 11-point lead midway through the opening quarter. The Chants continued to build their lead over the opening 10 minutes, eventually doubling-up NCCU, 22-11, to go into the second.
Coastal appeared to be in full control of the game after scoring the first five points of the second quarter to lead 27-11, but NCCU used a 12-2 run to close out the half and trim the Chants' advantage to six points at the break.
The NCCU run carried into the second half as the Eagles got the first two baskets to trim the scoring margin to two points, the lowest since the first quarter. Coastal then rallied, going 5-of-12 from the field and hitting all six free throw attempts to outscore the Eagles 18-14 in the third.
The Chants finished the game on a high note, shooting 66.7 percent from the field as they retook a double-figure scoring advantage.
Coastal begins a two-game road swing this Saturday when it travels to Marshall for a 1 p.m. tip at the Cam Henderson Center.
