CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss on Monday night as the Chanticleers fell 49-36 to the visiting Radford Highlanders at The HTC Center.
Coastal falls to 7-13, 2-9 with the loss while Radford improves to 11-10, 7-5 as the Highlanders sweep the regular season series against the Chants.
It was a tight game through the first 20 minutes of play as the score was tied at 10-apiece at the end of the first quarter and Radford held a slim 20-18 lead going into halftime. The Highlanders expanded their lead to nine points after three quarters of play, and held the largest lead of the night at 18 points with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. The margin was cut in the final minutes after Olivia Carlton scored four straight points and Jas Adams added a layup right before the buzzer.
It was a low-scoring affair for both sides as Coastal posted its lowest point total against a Big South opponent this season, and Radford its third lowest.
Coastal -- which entered the game second in the Big South in 3-pointers made and third in 3-point field goal percentage -- made just one of 17 attempts from beyond the arc, the lowest 3-point shooting total for the Chants this season. Overall, Coastal finished 16-of-62 from the field, the third straight game shooting below 30 percent.
Radford finished 19-of-50 (38.0 percent) from the field, and was led by the 15 points of Aisha Foy. Jayda Worthy followed with 12 points, and forward Janayla White totaled a game-high 21 rebounds.
No Chants reached double figures as Adams led Coastal with eight points and Ced Gibson added six. Five other Chants finished with four points apiece.
Coastal forced 14 of Radford's 24 total turnovers, its highest steal total since recording 15 takeaways against Wake Forest on Dec. 18. The Chants started the game forcing four of Radford's nine turnovers in the first quarter as the teams traded baskets to bring about a tie after 10 minutes of play.
Radford pulled out to a six-point lead in the middle of the second quarter, but was held scoreless by the Chanticleer defense for the final 4:06 before the halftime break. The Highlanders missed all eight field goal attempts during that stretch.
Coastal's long-range shooting woes continued into the second half as the Chants were 0-9 from deep after three quarters of play. Radford, meanwhile, received a combined nine points from Worthy and Foy in the third quarter as the Highlanders began to widen the margin.
The Chants then suffered nearly four scoreless minutes of play in the final quarter as Radford built towards its largest lead of the night.
Coastal returns to the hardwood on Saturday when the Chants travel to UNC Asheville to take on the first-place Bulldogs. Opening tip from Kimmel Arena is set for 2 p.m. Asheville took the first game in the season series on Dec. 14, topping the Chants 63-52.
