Chanticleers Win On Walk Off Hit in Extra Innings

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team won 2-1 on a walk off hit from Alexis Alvino in extra innings over Cleveland State, Sunday afternoon. The Chants improve their record 4-6 on the season and going 4-1 on the weekend.

Coastal put a run on the board in the bottom of the first take a 1-0 lead over the Vikings. With one out and Bri Chiusano on third base the Chants were put in good scoring position. Morgan Noad was up to bat but hit a fly out to left field. Chiusano used her speed to score on Noads fly out, taking the lead 1-0. With two outs and bases load, Alexis Alvino is up to bat but popped up to the 3rd baseman to end the inning.

Cleveland State tied it up in the top of the third with a RBI single. The Vikings were able to get two runners on base of a double and one walk. The following batter hit a single driving in the runner on second making it 1-1.

For four straight innings, both teams remained scoreless allowing only five hits total between the two teams.

In the fourth, Coastal pitcher Kelsey Dominik, allowed one hit but defensive Dominik and the team made up for the deficit with one strikeout and two putouts to head into the bottom of the fourth. But after getting one runner on base for the Chants, the following three batters went 1-2-3 to end the inning.

Annie Robinson singled to center field with two outs for the Chants but Kailey Mellen popped up the next pitch for out number three to end the fifth. Robinson led the Chants with three hits having four at bats.

The Vikings were able to get runners on first and third in the sixth but Coastal was able to make the defensive play on a grounded ball to the shortstop at second base.

Defensively, both teams matched up in the seventh to force extra innings.

To start the inning the Vikings place a runner on second base due to the extra innings international rule. Up to bat for Cleveland State was Joecken who reached on a fielder's choice as CCU went for out number one at third base. The next two batters struck out looking followed by a ground out to second.

Coastal also places a runner on second, with Timi Tooley up to bat. Tooley grounded out to the Vikings pitcher for a SAC bunt moving Buccilli, who was on second, to third base putting the Chanticleers in good scoring position. Alexis Alvino was up to bat with one for the Chants. Alvino hits a RBI single to drive in Buccilli to win 2-1 over Cleveland State.

Dominik pitched a full eight innings for the Chanticleers allowing six hits, one run and had four strikeouts.
