COLUMBIA - The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered a loss in a tight, low-scoring game Tuesday night against state rival, South Carolina, 3-1.

After a stellar offensive weekend, Annie Robinson continued her momentum recording the Chanticleers first hit in the top of the second but CCU could not seem to break the Gamecocks defense.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second for South Carolina, Watts reached on a fielder's choice after shortstop Alexis Alivno made a key throw to Morgan Noad to get the lead runner out at home, keeping the score 0-0. However, the Gamecocks' next batter singled up the middle to drive in two runners to take the lead 2-0.

The Gamecocks added another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single taking a 3-0 lead over Coastal.

Coastal responded in the top half of the fifth. Alexis Alvino hit a one-out homer to left field to close in on South Carolina's lead, 3-1. Alvino recorded her second homerun of the season.

The Chants were feeding off Alvinos homerun, going 1-2-3 out to end the inning.

Trying to build the energy back up, Kelsey Dominik doubled to right center field, putting the Chants in good scoring position. But once again, the Gamecocks defense remained solid as they close out the inning with a strikeout and grounded out.

Dominik suffered the loss dropping to a 3-5 record on the season.

Coastal softball will be back in action at home this weekend hosting the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Tournament play will begin on Friday, but Coastal will begin play on Saturday morning. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
