PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2015-16 schedule and stands in a tie for sixth in the 15-team John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par 72, 6m966-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
The Chanticleers and 23rd-ranked UCLA Bruins each posted an opening-round 303 (15-over par).
Host and 37th-ranked North Florida carded a 5-over par 293 to lead the field. Jacksonville is six shots off the lead after a first-round 299. The top five is rounded out by #13 Oklahoma State (300), #47 Louisville (301) and North Texas (302). Trailing the Chants and Bruins are #48 Liberty (305), #50 Tennessee (305), #38 UAB (3-7) and #43 East Carolina (310).
Freshman Luis Ruiz led the Chanticleers in the first round, posting four birdies in his opening-round 2-over 74 to tie for ninth. Sophomore Thadd Obecny II carded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 18th while Alfredo Ruiz shot a 76 to tie for 26th. Olle Widegren si tied for 46th after his first-round 78 while Daniel Overas is tied for 79th (83).
Harrison Frye, playing as an individual, shot an 86 and he is tied for 86th.
The second of three rounds will be played Saturday with the annual event concluding with 18 holes Sunday.
