Feb. 27, 2016 CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team cruised to victories over Iowa, 10-8, and Georgia Southern, 9-5, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Coastal improves to a 6-7 on the season with the wins. The Chanticleers will return to action Sunday, once again taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes (10 a.m.) and Georgia Southern Eagles (approximately 12:30 p.m.)
The Chanticleers had eight hits to score eight runs that gave them the comeback win over Iowa, 10-8, in game one. Overall, CCU combined for 11 hits with Morgan Noad leading the way with four hits and two RBI's.
Iowa went up 2-0 in the top of the first with a two-run single. Coastal answered with a pair of the runs in the bottom of the first to tie it up at 2-2. Back-to-back singles to center field from Noad and Taty Forbes gave the Chants runners on first and second. Annie Robinson doubled to center field driving in Noad and Forbes to score.
Iowa regained a two-run lead in the third inning thanks to a two-run hit from Iowa's Mallory Kilian.
Coastal once again answered. Robinson was walked, followed by Kailey Mellen's single to center field. On the first pitch she saw, Alexis Alvino hit a homer to left field to take the lead 5-4.
The Hawkeyes would not let up, scoring four runs on five hits to lead once again, 8-5, in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth and the bases loaded, the Chants scored three runs on consecutive bases loaded walks by Alvino, Angela Buccilli and Bri Chiusano to tie it up at eight a piece. Noad ended the inning with a two-run single to center field which proved to be the difference in the Chants' 10-8 win.
In game two Saturday, Coastal hit three homeruns and tallied 13 hits to take a 9-5 win over Georgia Southern.
Mellen hit the first homer of the game for the Chanticleers, putting it over left-center field fence for a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Southern had bases loaded in the top of the third and scored on an RBI ground out to tie up the game at 1-1.
Coastal answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Mackenzie Conrad hit a home run, driving in Robinson. Conrad finished with three hits and four RBI's against Georgia Southern.
The Chants allowed Georgia Southern to score on an error but made up for it the following inning, scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Alvino hit a homerun, the second of the day for her, to center field giving the Chanticleers momentum. Buccilli doubled, Chiusano singled off a bunt to put runners on first and third. Forbes singled up the middle, driving in Buccilli. Chiusano stole third base then scored on a throwing error by the Eagles. Forbes scored on a ground out to give the Chants its fourth run of the frame.
Coastal tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead.
The Eagles attempted a rally by scoring three runs in the seventh but was not enough for a comeback win.
Freshman pitcher Ashely Guillette earned the win for Coastal and improved to 2-2 on the season.
