Coastal Downs Gardner-Webb in Big South Opener

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team won its first Big South Conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping Gardner-Webb 6-1 at the GWU Tennis Courts.
Coastal improves to 6-3, 1-0 with the win, while the Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 3-5, 1-1. Saturday's match was not the conference opener for GWU, which previously defeated Presbyterian this season.
"Today was a great team effort across the board," said Chanticleer head coach Catherine Hewitt. "Our team played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and it's great to start the conference schedule off with a win."
Coastal opened the scoring after claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
GWU struck first in doubles, however, as Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon posted a 6-1 win over Natalie Wall and Cari Berry.
Marie Babayan and Romane Delay evened the doubles point at No. 3 with 6-2 result against Sarah Rieckmann and Laura Fermosel, and the Chants' top paring of Libby Scott and Sara Bondar clinched the point with a 6-2 win.
Coastal quickly sealed the match following doubles, taking five straight singles points, the first three of which ended in straight sets.
Bondar started off the singles round knocking off Mixon at No. 6, followed by Scott over Sacko and No. 1 and Berry over Rieckmann at No. 3.
Delay won in three sets against Bolstad at No. 4, and Babayan notched Coastal's final point at No. 5 with a three-set win over Catherine White.
Stina Magnusson recorded GWU's lone point with a three-set win over Wall at No. 2 to close out the match.
Coastal plays the second contest of its three-match road swing on Sunday when the Chants head to Charlotte for an 11 a.m. meeting with the 49ers.
