GWU Breaks Coastal's Streak as Chants Fall, 61-51

Box Score Feb. 27, 2016

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team had its winning streak snapped at three games as the Chanticleers (11-16, 6-12) fell 61-51 to visiting Gardner-Webb (19-10, 13-6) Saturday afternoon at The HTC Center.

The Chants' also had their three-game home winning streak broken as Coastal suffered its first loss on its home court since Feb. 1.

The final margin proved to be the largest of a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change hands seven times.

GWU's Candace Brown led all players with 21 points, finishing 8-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line. Brown was also one rebound short of joining Olivia Parker with a double-double. Parker pulled in a game-high 16 rebounds and notched 16 points on 5-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the line.

Ced Gibson and Jas Adams co-led the Chants with 12 points each, and Kennedy Archer added 10.

A strong second half boosted GWU's field goal shooting to 40.4 percent overall, while Coastal finished 27.5 percent from the floor, including an 8-of-35 second half. The Runnin' Bulldogs also held a 47-40 advantage on the boards.

A close first half in which each side shot around 30 percent from the field resulted in a slim 30-29 Coastal lead at the break.

Gibson got out to another quick start, scoring nine points in the first quarter, but was held scoreless in the second after fouling twice and spending an extended period on the bench. Nicole Isaacs also faced early foul trouble, resulting in just three Coastal baskets from beyond the arc as the Chants' top 3-point shooter played just six first-half minutes. Isaacs finished the game with two points, snapping her streak of six straight games scoring in double figures.

Coastal committed 12 fouls over the first 20 minutes, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs 19 chances at the line, though the damage was limited as GWU converted just 11 of those chances.

The Chants' foul troubles continued into the second half as Coastal was booked 26 times throughout the game. Gardner-Webb closed the contest 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) from the line, though finished 3-of-4 at the stripe over the final two minutes of play to put the game out of reach.

Coastal had threatened late in the game, cutting the deficit to five with 2:28 remaining after Gibson finished off a three-point play at the line. Those were Coastal's final points of the game, however, as the Chants managed just three baskets in the final quarter.

The Chanticleers return to the court on Tuesday to play their final regular season road game at Longwood. Tip-off between the Chants and Lancers is set for 7 p.m. from Willett Hall.
