PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - Coastal Carolina concluded its first event of the spring season with a 14th-place finish at the annual John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par 72, 6,966-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
The 15-team field featured eight of the nation's top 50 teams with 13th-ranked Oklahoma State winning with a 54-hole score of 6-under par 858. Host Jacksonville, which placed third (881), was the only non-ranked squad in the top nine as #37 North Florida was runner-up (867), #50 Tennessee was fourth (883), #43 East Carolina was fifth (889), #38 UAB was sixth (890), #47 Louisville was seventh (891), #23 UCLA was eighth (894) and #48 Liberty tied for ninth (897). The Chanticleers finished with a three-day total of 918 (303-311-304).
Freshman Luis Ruiz led Coastal as he tied for 27th. He posted a final-round, 2-over 74 tanks to three birdies and five bogeys. Overall, he had a 54-hole score of 7-over par 223 (74-75-74). Sophomore Thadd Obecny II, who also three birdies in the final round, trimmed three strokes off his second round by shooting a 3-over 75. He tied for 47th with a score of 228 (75-78-75).
Alfredo Ruiz tied for 62nd after posting a three-day total of 232 (76-78-78). Olle Widegren tied for 82nd (78-84-77=239) and Daniel Overas finished 86th (83-80-91=254).
Coastal Carolina will return to action March 7-8 at the Palmetto Classic in Aiken before hosting the annual General Hackler Championship March 12-13.
