ASHEVILLE, N.C. - After trailing for three quarters of play, Coastal Carolina (7-14, 2-10) outscored Asheville (18-4, 10-2) by seven points in the fourth quarter to force the Chanticleers' first overtime game of the season. The Bulldogs, however, scored 11 points in the extra period to escape with a 77-69 win Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.
Yasmin Miller led the fourth-quarter charge with nine points and finished as the game's leading scorer with 21, a career high. The Chants led by as many as seven points with 4:25 left in the fourth until Asheville rallied late to even the score at 63 apiece with 15 seconds remaining. Coastal had the ball in the closing seconds of regulation, but Ced Gibson's missed jumper before the buzzer sent the teams to overtime.
A key sequence in the first minute of overtime saw Asheville gain a four-point lead as an off-ball foul was called on Coastal while Chatori Major simultaneously hit her third 3-pointer of the afternoon. Bronaza Fitzgerald knocked down the following free throws to complete the five-point sequence and put Asheville in front 69-65. Gibson cut the lead to two on the next possession, and Miller added her final field goal less than a minute later, but Coastal was held off the board for the final 3:08 of the period as Asheville widened its lead for the win.
Miller closed the game 7-of-9 from the field ââ'¬" including a 3-pointer ââ'¬" and 6-of-7 from the line. Gibson followed with 19 points, her second-highest total of the season following the 24 scored against Campbell on Dec. 1. Nicole Isaacs rounded out the Chants' double-figure scorers with 12 points.
Coastal's field goal shooting improved dramatically as the game went along, jumping from 28.1 percent in the first half to 63.6 percent in the second, helping propel the Chants to their late rally.
Asheville prevailed on the boards 40-37, and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points for the Bulldogs.
Tianna Knuckles ââ'¬" AVL's leading scorer with 20 points ââ'¬" led the Bulldogs to an early lead as the junior guard hit all four of her shots to start the game and accounted for 11 of Asheville's 16 points prior to the first quarter's media timout. Following the timeout, however, Asheville went just 1-of-6 from the field, allowing Coastal to cut what was a nine-point deficit to four at the end of the quarter.
The Chants managed just three field goals in the second quarter, and Asheville hit three triples right before the halftime buzzer to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
Asheville continued to control play in the early going of the third quarter, leading by as many as 13 after Knuckles knocked down her fourth 3-pointer at the 7:20 mark. Coastal then went to work down low, getting eight of its next 10 points in the paint while chipping away at Asheville's lead. Isaacs hit a late 3-pointer and Miller added two more points at the line to cut Coastal's deficit to seven at the end of three.
Saturday's decision extends Coastal's season-long losing streak to five games. It is also Coastal's fifth straight loss to the Bulldogs dating back to the first meeting of the 2014-15 sesaon.
Coastal will look to break its skid on Tuesday when the Chants return to The HTC Center to host High Point for a 7 p.m. tip. The Panthers took the first game of the season series 53-52 on Jan. 12.
